2000, Golden Propagule Award on the international Meeting on Mangrove Macrobenthos, Mombasa, Kenya, awarded by the organizing committee for the presentation Impressions of the Mangrove.

2001, Laureate of the yearly Prize issued by the Class of Natural and Medicinal Sciences of the Belgian Royal Academy of Overseas Sciences for the PhD dissertation Mangrove Vegetation Structure Dynamics and Regeneration.

2004, Development Cooperation Prize 2003 of the Directorate-General for International Co-operation (Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation) for the publication Neo-colonial science by the most industrialised upon the least developed countries in peer-reviewed publishing, an elaboration of the PhD Sciences Annex Thesis Scientific research with a possible relevance in the framework of development cooperation as evident from the geographic location of (part of) the research is, at the level of the academic development of local scientists, insufficiently done in co-operation with research groups from the country on which the research focuses, and for promoting the opposite in past and on-going research undertakings.

2004, Best Poster Award (1st runner-up) at the International Society of Ethnobiology 9th International Congress on Ethnobiology, Social Change and Displacement, in collaboration with the 45th Annual Meeting of the Society for Economic Botany, and the 8th International Congress of the International Society of Ethnopharmacology, Canterbury, U.K., awarded by the International Society of Ethnobiology.

2005, Nominated for the Honorary Membership of the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association – WIOMSA.

2006, Dr. Edouard Delcroix Prize 2005 issued by the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) and HYDRO to foster scientific research in the vast context of “The marine environment and health” in honour of Dr. Edouard Delcroix (1891-1973), Belgian orthopaedic surgeon and pioneer in thalassotherapy, for scientific undertakings of the past 10 years on Mangrove ecosystem degradation and its effects on the quality of life of coastal subsistence communities in Third World countries.
