Inge Bertels

Inge Bertels is a historian (KULeuven, 1998) and master in Conservation (R. Lemaire Centre for Conservation KULeuven, 2000). Simultaneous with her studies in conservation she worked as an architectural historian at the Antwerp Architect’s offices R. Steenmeijer & H. Baksteen (1999-2000). From October 2000 to October 2006 she was related to the R. Lemaire International Centre for Conservation and the research group Architectural History of the Department of Architecture, Urbanism and Planning of the KULeuven. Where, in April 2008 she successfully defended her PhD ‘Building the City, Antwerp 1819-1890’. Later on she worked as a postdoctoral fellow of the Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek at the Centre of Urban History at the Department of History of the Universiteit Antwerpen. Since 2008 she gradually started teaching architectural history and theory at Department of Architectural Engineering of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

Her personal research focuses on the intersection of nineteenth and twentieth century Construction History and urban history. Since the start of 2013 she is the representative of the Vrije Universiteit Brussels in the cooperation agreement with the Agentschap Onroerend Erfgoed van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap (Agency for Immovable Heritage of the Flemish Community). She is a member of the advisory board or the international Journal of Construction History, editor of the journal Stadsgeschiedenis, member of  Le Conseil d’administration of the Association francophone d'histoire de la construction (Paris) and member of the KNAW-expert commission Onderzoeksmasteropleidingen Geesteswetenschappen for the Nederlandse Vlaamse Accreditatie-organisatie (NVAO). Finally, since 2015 she is a member of the Board of the Vlaams Architectuurinstituut (VAi).

She was supervisor of the PhD of Bart Tritsmans (UA-VUB), and the ongoing  doctoral research of Marianne Defossé (VUB), Matthijs Degraeve (VUB), Jelena Dobbels (VUB), Sara Melsens (VUB), Linsy Raaffels (VUB), Louis Vandenabeele (VUB), Frederik Vandyck (VUB) and co-supervisor of Pieter De Raedt (VUB) and Loïc Wauzquez (ULB). She is a member of the advisory committee of the PhD research of Reinout Klaarbeek (KULeuven), Eva Strogaard (UA) and Karen Vannieuwenhuyze (UA). Moreover she collaborates with post-doctoral researchers Stephanie Van de Voorde (VUB), Heidi Deneweth (HOST VUB) and Susan Galaven (KULeuven - VUB).
