Mailserver at the Computing Centre to be replaced

After 7 years of service, the mailserver at the Computer Centre, also known as MACH/POP/SMTP/IMAP/WEBMAIL, will be replaced. The replacement is scheduled for

MONDAY, 29 MARCH 2004 from 17:00 until 23:00

The following services will be unavailable during this period:

• sending and receiving email (mach/pop/smtp/imap), not even with Webmail
• access to personal webpages on student/homepages
• access to the anonymous FTP server (ftp.vub.ac.be, ftp.ulb.ac.be)
• large format plotters at the Computing Centre  (Webplot)

After the migration the above services will be available again as before the migration.

• 17:00 : Start of the migration
• 17:10 : Copying user files and incoming mailboxes to the new server
• 17:50 : User files copied
• 18:00 : Copying the incoming mailboxes will be finished around 21:00
• 21:00 : Copying of incoming mailboxes has been completed
• 21:00 : Verification of network services and configurations
• 22:15 : Creation of the alias database and system quotas
• 23:00 : We're running late...
• 23:03 : Verification of the mailconfiguration
• 23:12 : Transmitting messages in the queue to the new server
• 23:16 : Changing mailservices pop/imap/smtp to the new server
• 23:17 : Starting POP service
• 23:22 : Starting IMAP service
• 23:30 : Server is online, queued messages continue to arrive
• 23:30 - ... : Verifying and correcting the small anomalies (see the FAQ for questions and answers)
