Expiring old electronic mail messages.

Recent changes:

  1. August 2006: only messages in the Spam mailbox on the server are expired
  2. January 2001: cleaning up of mailboxes will also be done on the MINF server in Jette [ OBSOLETE ]
  3. April 2000: cleaning up of mailboxes will be done on all systems at the CC [ OBSOLETE ]
  4. March 2000: messages larger than 1 MB will be removed after 45 days [ OBSOLETE ]

To limit the amount of system resources (disk space, I/O and CPU time) consumed by large mailbox files, the Computing Centre used to clean up (expire) older messages from the incoming mailboxes on all its servers. As of August 29th 2006, only older messages in the Spam folder on the server are expired, messages in the Inbox on the server are no longer expired.

As as result, your mailbox on the server may grow in size if you do not clean up regularly. For more information on cleaning up messages on the server, see the Webnotes (UK, FR, NL).

Users are still advised to use file transfer to transmit large (multi-megabyte) documents and files via our FTP upload area whenever possible.

More information and assistance can be obtained from the User Support Group, telephone 02/629.37.37 or 02/650.37.37

Thank you for your kind cooperation.

The Computing Centre.
