As the old mailserver MACH will retire after 7 years of hard labour, its replacement will take over its heavy task on the 29th of March 2004 around 23:00.The new server has more and faster processors, more memory and more diskspace:
- a Sun Fire V1280 Server
- 8 Ultra SPARC III Cu Processors running at 1.2GHz
- 32 GB RAM
- 2 internal disks of 73 Gb
- 800 GB of new 15000 rpm diskdrives from the Storage Area Network (SAN) for incoming mailboxes, personal mailfolders and webpages
- Integrated Gigabit Ethernet
- Operating System: Solaris 9
As MACH has done such a wonderful job, we have decided that its successor should inherit the same name (and because of practical reasons). Only the IP address has changed.
- Hostname: mach.vub.ac.be or mach.ulb.ac.be
- IP address: 134.184.129.8 and 164.15.128.8
Exactly the same as its predecessor: it will be the mail server for 95% of the university community (personnel and students), host personal webpages and an anonymous FTP service. And it will take on new tasks, such as full-scale antivirus checking and anti-spam tools.
All persons who had an account on the old MACH will get one on the new MACH. All your files and e-mails on the old server will be transferred to the new server. You also keep your usual username and password to access the server. In fact, you shouldn't notice that you will be on the new server (except that it should be a lot faster). If you don't have an account on the server and are a registered member of the university community, you can activate your own account.
