Once you have installed WS_FTP, you can use it to transfer files to other computers.
To start the application, go into the Start menu, you will find the WS_FTP application in Programs/WS_FTP/WS_FTP_LE
WS_FTP comes with a number of profiles, these are particular configurations for particular servers. To connect, choose one of the existing profiles...
... or you can also define your own profile for each server you wish to connect to, simply fill in the details in a profile.
Click on the New button, and then fill in the details of the profile.
The profile name is just a name, so that you can easily remember which server it refers to. Then also specify the hostname and the User ID (username), the host type is usually UNIX.

Note: the server referred to is the personal homepages site at the university. Alternatives, among others, are student.vub.ac.be and student.ulb.ac.be (the student's webpages), ftp.vub.ac.be and ftp.ulb.ac.be for the FTP server and www.vub.ac.be and www.ulb.ac.be for the official webservers at the university.
You can also specify local and remote directories, so that when choosing a profile you immediately are in the correct directory. To do so, click on the Startup tab and specify the directories of your choice.
Click the Apply button to confirm the settings. Your profile is now saved. When you click back on the General tab, you will get back to the main login window where you can select the profile of your choice.
If you don't see the Profile windows, you can click on the Connect button to open it.
You can then choose a profile to login onto the server.
Click OK to use this profile to login. If you haven't saved your password, you will be prompted for it. Once you have successfully logged on onto the server, you will see that the main window is split in two. The left side is the status of the directory on your local computer, on the right you will see the files and directories on the server.
To transfer a file, select the file you wish to transfer, make sure to select the correct type of transfer (text files are to be transferred in ASCII, binary files such as images (gif, jpg,...), PDF files, Word, Excel and Powerpoint files (.doc, .xls and .ppt) have to be transferred in Binary) and click either of the arrows between the left and right part to transfer the file to the other "side" (in the example , we have changed to another directory on the server with the ChgDir button and we will transfer a file from the server to the local computer).
The transfer will start...
... and after the transfer your file show up on the other side.
You can transfer other files if you need to. After you have transferred all your files, click the Close button at the left-bottom of the Window to close the FTP session. To quit WSFTP, click the Exit button on the bottom-right side.
You can browse through the other buttons if you wish. As you see there is a Help button.
