These are instructions for sending a message to a moderated Majordomo mailing list. They are not straightforward to do, so contact me if you have problems. BOUNCED messages From within Eudora, the text you want to send should start with the headers of the original message. Add a line Approved: password on top of this message (the password is the password you get from the mailinglist manager - that is me :-). The most easy way to achieve this is 'Redirect'/'Send Again' the message, and add the "Approved:" line on top, as indicated below: Approved: your-password From pvrossem@vub.ac.be Thu Jun 22 09:13:55 1995 Date: Thu, 22 Jun 95 09:13:55 +0200 Message-Id: <9506220713.AA12934@smtp.vub.ac.be> To: testlist@listserv.vub.ac.be From: pvrossem@vub.ac.be (Peter Van Rossem) Subject: This is the subject of this message Blablabla (actual message) And then send the message. Some very important remarks: * Make sure that the From below the Approved line starts with the From in the first column of the message (not >From). * Make sure to remove any Received: lines in the headers before sending as they tend to mess up the message. * Make sure that when you send a MIME message - e.g. an attachment - that both lines "MIME-Version:" and "Content-Type:" are part of the list of headers - as indicated higher. Equally important is that the "Content-Type:" line is ONLY 1 LINE, and not split into 2 lines !! * And you might uncheck the signature button as well before sending. - - - - - - - - 2. Send messages directly (not from BOUNCEd) For messages that are not sent to the mailinglist but directly to you, proceed as follows. Copy the original headers from a message - without the received lines - (Edit/Copy) and then select to "Redirect" the message. Insert the headers on top of the message you are about to resend. Also add the line with the password on the very top of the message. Then fill in the correct listname's address, and send the message. For messages that can be sent to the list directly by you, it is best to send it first to the mailinglist without giving the password, it will then BOUNCE. Then proceed as it was a BOUNCEd message (see above). Problems will occur if the message is a MIME message, the headers will be incorrect. === Sending with mail/elm (UNIX) ======================================= From within a UNIX mailer, it may depend which one you use, but if you use 'mail', it should work the same as with Eudora. In any case, don't put the Approved line into the headers of the original message ! $ mail pcp-news@listserv.vub.ac.be Approved: your-password Date: Thu, 22 Jun 95 09:13:55 +0200 Message-Id: <9506220713.AA12934@smtp.vub.ac.be> To: testlist@listserv.vub.ac.be From: pvrossem@vub.ac.be (Peter Van Rossem) Subject: This is the subject of this message Blablabla (actual message) You should start the message you send as "moderator" to listname@listserv.vub.ac.be with a blank line, to indicate to the mail program that the Approved: line and the rest of the headers you include is part of the BODY of the message. - - - - - - - With elm, the proper procedure is to 'forward' the message to bounce, edit the message by removing all the forwarding headers (and removing all '>'), and adding (in the message) the 'Approved: password' line, followed by a blank line. This should do it correctly. [ CORRECTION ] In elm there is also a way to forward a message while including the original message, but leaving out the '>' marks. You should answer 'No' to the question 'Edit outgoing message?'. Then you will directly arrive on the menu where you can type 'send', but you should edit the message (typing E) instead. Remove all forwarding headers (first series of headers) until the first blank line. Add the 'Approved: password' line before that blank line. Then also remove the '>' sign on the '>From' line. Save and send the message. You're done. === end of instructions ================================================
