The primary aims are:
Several programs related to INFORMATION have been organised up to now and will probably be organised in the future.
Organised, approved/supported by VL.I.R., the Flemish Inter-university Council, and sponsored by the Belgian Government (more specifically by ABOS/BADC) (with a contribution by Unesco-IHP):
An international training program on the Management of Information in Science and Technology.
In the area of Belgium where most of the course activities take place, Dutch is spoken, and in that language "mist" means "fog", as it does in English. Of course the aim of the training course is to clear the fog and obscurity which often covers this strange phenomenon named "information".
An international training program on "Knowledge Organization for Water-sciences - Hydrology, Oceanography, Water-resources management".
This program was aimed at information intermediaries in the area of water-related science and technology. The name refers generally to the need to use, manage and exploit existing "know-how" (information) as well as possible.
Proposed by University Library - Vrije Universiteit Brussel, in co-operation with K.U.L. and the interuniversity postgraduate study program in Information and library science, approved/supported by VL.I.R., and sponsored by the Belgian Government (DGIS):
Scientific and Technological Information Management in Universities and
Libraries:
an Active Training Environment
This initiative is aimed at academic professionals working in universities and libraries, including of course university libraries.
The following are some examples of what participants have written about their experience:
"Reception upon arrival was very good"
"STIMULATE should be sustained since it is one of the best international training programs for information professionals from developing countries."
"I can't forget you or Belgium in my life. It was a very great experience in Europe. I earned something for my knowledge. All the professors were very kind to us. I found a good country with better people. Thank you very much for doing such a very great help for me."
Spontaneous comments:
"I really would like to see another colleague of mine be part of STIMULATE
because it was for me a very life enriching experience not only as an
information professional but also as a student who was given the chance to learn
from world class professors. Until now, I can very well remember and apply the
things I have learned during my three months training there in Brussels, it has
given me the edge and the confidence. I also got to teaching part time now at
the UP Institute of Library and Information Science, a position offered to me
after I return from my training." <elvira.lapuz@up.edu.ph>
"I have interacted with a number of librarians in Africa who have attended
this course and they all concur among the many library courses they have
attended no course beats STIMULATE in terms of content and relevance to
contemporary library practice."

Comment by a participant to ITP-STIMULATE 9:
"I am very grateful to the STIMULATE authority for selecting me as a
participant this time. I am obliged to all the faculty members who helped us in
the last three months to explore more information on knowledge management. We
are very lucky to have such experienced & learned teachers.
My interest in Librarianship and lack of proper training in my country motivated
me to apply for STIMULATE9. The training is completely in English with full
scholarship and these facts encouraged me more to apply for it.
It's been a well structured updated training curriculum with an orientation
towards the expanding cross-disciplinary area of knowledge organization and
knowledge management. The teaching methods and training curriculum is well
thought-out. I believe that the training will broaden my professional knowledge
in other areas besides librarianship.
I am sure that what I have learnt in this program both theory and practical
aspects of librarianship would make me a better professional in my area of
specialization in my organization. All the participants were very friendly and
helpful. I have made some good friends here and I have learned a lot of things
from them.
Besides, participating in the 30th IATUL Conference, I take it as an opportunity
to meet people from around the world and get some input that I might not get
from any ordinary training. Being a scholar in an international training program
I came to know more about how the field is considered in other countries. I
think it is important to know about other countries, their culture and how they
do the same thing in different ways.
My experience in Brussels is unforgettable. The weather was nice. It's expensive
to live in Belgium but it is always a good learning experience to do training in
the capital of Europe. What I like most is the greenness, the public
transportation/communication system, the parks and the fact that Brussels is a
multi-cultural city."
