This schedule grows and changes in the course of the program.

All lectures and academic activities are compulsory for the participants with a VLIR scholarship.

If a participant can not attend the class, then he/she should inform the organizers by sending an e-mail to stimulate@vub.ac.be

Arrival information

 

For the PARTICIPANTS ARRIVING BY AIRPLANE (Zaventem Airport):

Arriving participants are picked-up by a taxi service arranged by the organizers in order to facilitate the participants’ journey to the student home.

The taxi driver will be waiting for you next to the Stella Artois Café (bar) with a paper written STIMULATE on it. This bar is at your left side when entering the arrival hall of the airport. 

 

For the PARTICIPANTS ARRIVING BY TRAIN (Brussel South Train Station):

Arriving participants are picked-up by a taxi service arranged by the organizers in order to facilitate the participants’ journey to the student home.

The taxi driver will be waiting for you at Sam’s Café. This café is located in the big central hallway of the train station, very close to track 1. The taxi driver will hold a paper written STIMULATE on it.

 

The participants are brought to the student home, of which the address is:

The taxi service will cost 60 Euro per ride. You do not have to pay the taxi driver immediately. Reimbursement of this sum to the Stimulate program will be arranged in the first week of the program.

Important note: for the reimbursement of the taxi cost, it does not matter if you are in a taxi alone or with other participants of the Stimulate program. Everyone pays 60 euro per ride. 

Note: if you do not wish to make use of this arranged taxi service, please inform the program organisers. If not, we will arrange a taxi service.

 

Welcome packs are handed over to the participants upon their arrival in the student home. These packs contain: a map of Brussels, bloc note, pen, notes of main courses, a city guide, Belgian chocolate… The key to the room is handed over by the responsible person of the student home or by Alexander Coppens.

The participants can go to the Anderlecht Market. This is a big open market with all kinds of foods and clothes. It is open every Saturday and Sunday. To go there, take subway line 6 departing from Simonis Leopold II in the direction of Simonis Elisabeth. Get of at stop Clemenceau (stop 5). The market is open in the morning until 2pm.

VUB Campus Jette: entrance of the student home

Alexander Coppens

Alexander Coppens will wait for the arrived participants in front of the entrance of the student home on VUB Campus Jette and will go with them to the VUB Campus Etterbeek. Alexander Coppens will explain the cultural program, medical insurance, scholarship payments, user-id’s for accessing the computer network at the university, registration. A short tour of both campuses will be given.

 

The students entitled to a VLIR scholarship go to Martine Gheysen (International Relations and Mobility, Campus Etterbeek, Vrijwilligerslaan 2, 1160 Brussel) to collect their voucher and receive information about their scholarship. These students should take their passport, a small picture and their ticket with them.

The students who are not entitled to a VLIR scholarship go to Patrick Boeckstijns (International Relations and Mobility, Campus Etterbeek) to arrange their insurance.

Poster presentation and welcome reception.

 

Welcome reception and short presentation by the participants. The participants and lecturers of the programme will be able to meet in an informal atmosphere. Drinks and snacks are provided.

This is organised with printed posters created by each participant, in a small poster exhibition with time allotted for stimulating and ice-breaking discussions. Therefore, participants should create a poster in their home country and bring it to Belgium.

Each participant creates a poster to present information to the other participants of the training program as well as to the lecturers, about
1. the location of their professional organisation
2. the aims of their professional home organisation/institute.
3. their personal professional function and expertise
4. their professional needs, expectations, wishes, priorities
The hope is that during this session, the participants can get to know each other better and they can make interesting professional contacts.

The poster can consist of several sheets A4 or better A3 size, with printed text and figures and can contain a leaflet or brochure about their home organisation. The poster should not be bigger than 1 square meter. The secretariat of the program will provide adhesive tape to mount the poster on a wall.

An overview of citation analysis is presented, emphasizing its formal aspects as applied network theory. Relations with web linking are highlighted. Yet, also social aspects related to the act of citing, e.g., the invisible college, are discussed. Its relation with research evaluation is discussed. This leads to a discussion of the databases that are available to collect citations: Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar. The author h-index is discussed. The students make simple practical exercises using the Internet.

OMO. People and design.

The Omo valley, located in south-western Ethiopia, is on Unesco’s World Cultural Heritage List. The Ethnographic section of the Royal Museum of Central Africa possesses over 1,000 objects collected from those pastoral people, representing one of the largest collections for the region.The exhibit offers one person’s view of the nomadic peoples of the Omo valley and of their relations with their environment.

 

PERSONA. Ritual masks and contemporary art.

A hundred masks from the Museum’s world-famous collection, together with some thirty from other European museums and private collections, will be exhibited alongside a number of contemporary works of arts and installations by African artists.

Departure information:

Note concerning transport to the airport at departure: there are different options to travel to the airport:

1. Taxi service: participants that would like to have a taxi picking them up at the student home, should inform Alexander Coppens before Wednesday July 22. This service costs 25 euro per ride (per person). Please inform Alexander about the exact time that you want the taxi to pick you up at the student home (the ride to the airport takes about 30 minutes maximum).  

2. By bus: Bus 820 from ‘De Lijn’ departs from UZ Jette and drives all the way to Zaventem airport. This ride takes about 1 hour. Earliest departure is at 4.52 am and latest is at 21.04 pm (on weekdays). To check the schedule of this bus, go to:

3. By bus and train: it is also possible to travel by bus to Brussel Noord train station and take the train to the airport from there.

It is best to pass by in their office the week before departure to make an appointment with them about the exact time of the check-up of your room.

Farewell gathering.

 

The participants are asked to prepare a typical dish from their home country and bring it with them. There is the possibility to warm up dishes (please note: it is not possible to actually cook/prepare the dishes in the convivium. Warming up home prepared dishes is no problem though). Stimulate sponsors as ingredients are refunded up to 10 euro per ‘cook’ (please bring your shop ticket for the repayment).

Please note: Alexander will pass by at he student home at 14 o’clock by car to pick up dishes that are not easy transportable by public transport. Make sure that your dish is put in a pot that is easy to transport and that closes well.

 

Certificates will be handed out to the participants and the winners of the photo contest (if any) will be revealed.

Each participant receives a CD with the study material and photos.

There will also be the possibility to project pictures on the wall which have been made by the participants during their stay in Belgium (bring a memory stick please).

 

The program organisers will also make an formal group photo of the participants.
