Bambara Sculpture from the Western Sudan
The Museum of Primitive Art and University Publishers, Inc.
1960
63 pages
1st Edition
112 Objects Illustrated & Described
Hardback
This book was realized to accompany the first comprehensive exhibition (held in 1960 in the Museum of Primitive Art) showing the Bambara art (masks, staffs, tjiwara, figures, ..). This scarce monograph contains many field taken photographs showing the material culture of this Malian ethnic group. This work analyses also the diversity of Bambara art styles and remains one of the 2 major reference books about the Bambara/Bamana (together with the more recent Bamana The Art of Existence of Mali).

with an Introduction by Robert Goldwater and photographs by Charles Uht
Traditional art of the African nations IN THE MUSEUM OF PRIMITIVE ART
THE MUSEUM OF PRIMITIVE ART, NEW YORK. DISTRIBUTED BY UNIVERSITY PUBLISHERS
INC., NEW YORK
1961
On the continent of Africa a group of nations has emerged. Recently
organized, recently independent, the rest of the world has become accustomed
to think of them as the new nations of Africa. And so they are in the
limited sense of geographical identity and political structure.
But in another, more profound sense these nations are far from new, or even
recent arrivals. Socially, culturally, aesthetically, their peoples have a
long and intricate history. Since for the most part that history has been
orally transmitted, we know only a portion, probably only a small portion of
the complex of its traditions and development. Some few specific dates have
been recorded by travellers from abroad; others, more ancient, have been
revealed by archaeology, which has told us enough so that we may be sure
that further investigations will tell us much more; some oral histories are
apparently chronologically accurate. But there are not many such temporally
pin-pointed facts, and their scarcity has perhaps given them an undue
importance, compared to the vast totality of African cultural history.
Even without documents, we can infer the quality of this history from what
we know of the nature of the recent past. The many cultural traditions of
Africa, in all their distinction and variety, the ordering of their social
structure, the intricacy and sharpness of their religious beliefs, the
wealth of their oral traditions--all these can only have evolved in the
course of a long, complex and thoughtful history.
The plastic arts of Africa are a manifestation of this cultural history, the
one perhaps best known to the world in general, and they carry its evidence
within themselves. Their skilled technique has a directness that comes from
an almost intuitive use of established methods, passed on and gradually
perfected. Their styles are as various as the cultures that have developed
them, since they embody and externalize them. Because the cultural unit has
been the "tribe" (which may number many hundreds of thousands of persons and
so is perhaps better referred to as a people), and the art reflects this
unit, any one of today's nations has been the home of many styles. If these
styles are distinct and recognizable, they are also related, and have
influenced and borrowed from each other. Neither immutable nor isolated, yet
clearly formed and individual, they are like the arts of the city-states of
Italy --Florence, Siena, or Bologna--...

Ancienne Collection Paul Guillaume
Art Nègre
Paris
hotel Drouot
1965
CATALOGUE

ERICH HEROLD
Ritualmasken Afrikas
Artia
1967
territorialen Besonderheiten wenig beachtet blieben.

AFRICAN FORUM TRADITIONAL AFRICAN ART
Traditional African Art American Society of African Culture (AMSAC)
1968

From the dustjacket:
"The impact of the art of African tribes on Western art in the 20th Century is
incalculable. It has not only influenced Picasso's Cubist and Primitive periods,
but its forms and contents have also inspired the surrealists, dadaists and
expressionists. Through its vigor, its marvelous geometric forms and its
evocative power, African art has taken its place, in a relatively short time,
among the world's great forms of artistic expression. However, the greater part
of its devotees have little knowledge of the African cultures that gave rise to
its forms. In these cultures, art is intimately bound to religion and magic and
at the same time plays a purely functional part in every day life. An
understanding of these relationships is essential to a full appreciation of the
artistic tradition. This work attempts to analyze the various aspects of this
tradition by placing the art within its cultural context. The author, Rene S.
Wassing, curator of the Museum voor Land-en Volkenkunde in Rotterdam, has
participated in many scientific expeditions in the Republic of Mali. His
training and experience allows him to transmit to the reader in a particularly
interesting fashion the aesthetics and techniques of African art. He succeeds in
communicating at the same time the enthusiasm of the collector and the insight
of the anthropologist. The author does not only evaluate masks and idols, the
two most well known forms of African art. He also explains the cultural
tradition of African tribes, the context out of which the art arises. The major
part of this work is illustrated by 24 color plates and 120 black and white
illustrations. In addition, a special chapter reproduces about 100 objects used
in everyday life according to function. All of the illustrations are the work of
celebrated photographer Hans Hinz. The objects reproduced-fetishes, masks,
weapons, cooking utensils and musical instruments-provide a unique reflection of
the rare beauty and rhythm of life of African civilization."

Art in Africa

131 pages of Text and 191 additional plates
This is a cloth covered hardbound book with dust jacket.
Although African art had been collected for hundreds of years as exotic curios
and anthropological specimens, it was not until the early part of this century,
when artists such as Picasso, Kirchner, Braque, and Matisse became fascinated
with it, that the work of native African artists came to be regarded universally
as an important branch of world art. Since that time, a number of excellent
studies have been done of the better-known examples of African artistry-the
terra-cotta and bronze figures of Old Ife and Benin, for example-and several
general surveys have been published which touch upon most of the rest of African
art.
The illustrations are a special feature of this book, since virtually none of
the works of art pictured has been published in the West before. They represent
the finest collections of Eastern Europe-notably Dresden. and Budapest which
were assembled mostly in the 19th century, and they display an antiquity and
freedom from acculturation that is rare in Western collections.
Changes in Western Attitudes Toward African Art
There is almost no reference to African art in ethnological works published in
the second half of the last century. Objects from the field of representational
arts and decorative art are presented as incidental illustrations accompanying
the chapters on material culture or on religious life. Works of plastic art-if
not actually disregarded-were looked upon as the incarnations of strange
abstract concepts, while the motifs of decorative art interested ethnologists
solely as the more or less conventionalized images of natural prototypes. Such
an attitude was only natural since scientists, including ethnologists, are no
exception to the situation whereby hardly anyone can free himself from the
spiritual tendencies and the aesthetic notions of his age, and most people
conform to the prevailing artistic trends and comply with public taste.
Signs of a change in this respect became manifest in the last decade of the
century. Evolutionism, the most significant scientific trend of those times,
made a perceptible impact upon art research. H. Balfour described the evolution
of decorative art, while A. C. Haddon and E. Grosse concerned themselves with
the beginnings and history of arts in general. True, these works already
accepted African, Oceanian, American or prehistoric creations as works of art,
but their approach was still one-sided and reflected the Zeitgeist of their age:
they regarded the arts of primitive peoples as rungs of an evolutionary ladder,
steps to the altar occupied by the peerless creations of the Greeks, Romans, of
the Renaissance and modern European art. Such acceptance is as yet not complete;
according to E. Grosse: ''The sentiments of primitive art are narrower and
cruder, its material poorer, its forms simpler and coarser, and yet, in its
essential motifs, tools and aims, the art of prehistoric times is one with the
art of all times.
Yet the stimulating effect of these works cannot be ignored. Grosse's findings
have made it evident that no universal history of art can be complete without
the presentation and analysis of non-European arts, regardless of whether these
arts have evolved along paths diverging from the main line. More than half a
century had elapsed after F. Kugler's truly universal work (which, apart from a
treatise on the antique relics of North Europe, included a study of the art of
Easter Island, Hawaii, Mexico and Peru) before the art of prehistoric and simple
peoples was again deemed to be worthy of discussion in K. Woermann's great
comprehensive work at the turn of the century.
Yet these works were not the principal factors in changing the prevailing
aesthetic approach; the decisive impulse was given by those revolutionary
European artists who, at the beginning of our century, had come to realize the
force of expression and the figurative value embodied in African and Oceanian
works of art. The end of the last century appeared to be tranquil, and though
the whole period preceding the First World War drifted sleepily along the stream
of Time, those susceptible to the spirit of the events to come had the feeling
that something had irretrievably passed, and that vital changes were looming
ahead. The clouds of the inexorably approaching war that was to destroy the old
values were still far on the horizon, but it was already felt that increasing
technicalization, spreading urbanization, and the explosive forces of economic
and social tensions were radically changing the mode of life, accelerating its
rhythm and transforming the whole mentality of the people. Besides, the entire
past, the Greco-Roman ideal, the well-fed monotony, regularity and symmetry of
the bourgeois way of life had become uninteresting, boring and too familiar.
Something new, astonishing and worthy of interest, something unaccustomed had to
be found; new forms of and new approaches to art were to be invented, which
would be suitable for exploring hidden depths and revealing the latent
interconnections of existing phenomena.
In all these tendencies the desire for romanticism and exoticism was inextricably interwoven with a conscious, deliberate, sober search for new forms. Gauguin found relief and experienced artistic renewal among the barbarians of Tahiti and Martinique (''All barbarism is rejuvenation''), while others discovered in the displays of ethnological museums a new world, a forceful and essential art which-though unusual-was not wholly alien to the forms sought by European artists. For all the difference in the intellectual life of the French and the Ger man peoples, this process took a parallel course in France and Germany, al though with different results. Having discovered the expressive force of the African and especially that of the Oceanian sculptures in the Staatliches Museum fur Volkerkunde of Dresden in 1904, E. L. Kirchner, captivated by their magic, enriched German Expressionism with a special flavor. The Cubist forms of African sculptures found at the same time enthusiastic admirers in Paris, and it will suffice to mention in this connection just a few names, e.g., Vlaminck, Derain, Picasso, Braque and Matisse.
All this was just the beginning, and the new sphere of interest was still narrow in art and ethnology alike. Nevertheless, the stone began to roll: ethnologists, exploring the material of museums, disclosed the beauties of non-European works of art, sculptures in particular; visitors began to get accustomed to the ''grotesque idols'' seen in exhibitions, while the novel creations of modern art mitigated the feeling of strangeness evoked by the exotic forms. However, those in favor of academic aesthetics were loath to surrender their positions. Let us quote here C. Einstein's acrimonious remark made in 1915 : ''There is hardly any art that is approached by Europeans with so much distrust as that of Africa. They are disinclined to recognize it as art and regard the contrast between its products and the accustomed continental concepts with a contempt and scorn that have actually created a special terminology of rebuttal.''' Again, A. Macke wrote the following in Der Blaue Reiter in 1912: ''The disdaining gesture with which connoisseurs and artists have hitherto confined the art of primitive peoples within the boundaries of ethnology and industrial art is, to say the least, astounding.''
The decisive change occurred after the First W odd War: it was during the feverish and turbulent postwar years that the seed planted at the beginning of the century began to shoot up. The devastations of the war, its accelerated rhythm of life, the extremes of suffering and delight brought new feelings, sensations and ideas to the surface; and the petrified art of prewar times proved to be impotent and inadequate for expressing the phenomena of dissolution, turbulence and chaos following the overthrow of the old idols. The few members of the vanguard were no longer the only people to be dissatisfied with the ''dullness of the past.'' All that was exotic, unusual, all that promised new ventures and stimuli had become interesting, and it was in this atmosphere that the general public discovered non-European (in the first place African) art in all its manifestations. Jazz music, imported via America, became attractive with its jerky rhythm; African poetry aroused attention by means of its combination of naive simplicity and refined flavor; and the newly awakened interest ex tended also to the works of sculptural art. The Devambez Gallery of Paris arranged in 19 I 9 the first exhibition of Oceanian sculptures, and the Anthologie negre of Blaise Cendrars was published in 1920; it was in that same year that the Action published the opinions concerning Negro art of such celebrated artists as Picasso, Lipschitz and Cocteau.
The fashion had passed, the enthusiasm had abated, but the process could no longer be stopped; Europe had definitively accepted and recognized the artistic value of non-European creations. The ethnologist E. Vatter was justified in stating in 1926 that '' ... primitive art as well as the-hitherto similarly neglected-prehistoric and early medieval European art constitute nowadays an integral part of art as a whole, and E. von Sydow, art historian and aesthete, was in a position to state in 1928 that'' ... we are justified in speaking of primitive art instead of merely primitive carving.
The two lines of research, the ethnological and the aesthetic, began to
converge. Earlier ethnologists, L. Frobenius for instance, were inclined to
judge works of art by their contents and were content to find out how forms were
determined by ideological associations, whereas aesthetes followed C. Einstein's
opinion. He thought it possible '' ... to eliminate that which is objective or
rather the objects of the environmental· associations and to analyse them as
special structures. True, both approaches are justified, but both illuminate one
aspect of the object only. The problem is not solved by finding out how a
concept materializes in a work of art, nor can the answer be found by
ascertaining the formal values that are expressed by the sculptures of a people;
it is also the art itself, with all its components and all its determinants,
that has to be explored. Though still a formalist, Sydow wrote the following in
1928: '' ... we require an intimate knowledge of the whole of that complex
called a work of art in order to recognize and judge, with full knowledge of
every relationship, that very element of form which is our main interest..."
