DER KULTURRAUM KAMERUN UND SEINE ERSCHLIESSUNG

Auf Grund seiner geographischen Lage zwischen West- und Zentralafrika war Kamerun seit jeher verschiedenen Einflüssen ausgesetzt. Im Mittelkameruner Hochland, dem sogenannten Grasland, dessen Bergmassive bedrängten Völkern Zuflucht boten (Ankermann 1910: 308), überschnitten sich die zentralafrikanische „Urwaldkultur" und die Kulturen des inneren Sudan, trafen die Wirtschaftsformen des Nordens mit Hirseanbau, Großviehzucht und Baumwollkultur auf den Knollen- und Maisanbau sowie die Kultur von Banane, Öl- und Raphiapalme des Südens. Hier berührten sich zwei der bedeutendsten Sprachfamilien Afrikas, die monosyllabischen Sudansprachen und die durch Klassen charakterisierten Bantusprachen, deren Nordgrenze weithin mit der nördlichen Urwaldgrenze zusammenfällt. Die sprachwissenschaftliche Stellung der von den Graslandvölkern gesprochenen Bantu-Idiome („Semi-Bantu") ist noch nicht einwandfrei geklärt. Impulse aus dem Staatengürtel des Sudan führten zu Reichsgründungen wie auch zur Ausbildung einer Vielzahl zentralisierter Häuptlingstümer, deren Oberhäupter häufig sakrale Züge tragen. Das weithin verbreitete Bund- und Maskenwesen, das Wirken geheimer Gesellschaften mit religiös-politischen Funktionen wiederum scheint seinen Ursprung in der Waldzone des Südens zu haben (Born 1975: 712-713). Aus dem Norden kam schließlich der Islam, verbreitet von den Staaten begründenden Fulbe, die nach der Unterwerfung Adamauas in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts ihr Herrschaftsgebiet nach Süden auszudehnen begannen und erst durch die europäische Kolonialmacht am weiteren Vordringen in das Grasland gehindert wurden.

Seit langem haben Ethnologen auf technologische wie stilistische Parallelen zwischen Kamerun und Nigeria (Benin) aufmerksam gemacht (Einstein 1921:18; Baumann und Vajda 1960: 217), doch ist dabei weniger an unmittelbaren Kontakt als vielmehr an einen gemeinsamen Ursprung in größerer zeitlicher Tiefe zu denken, der, was beispielsweise das Gelbgußverfahren beider Regionen betrifft, im Umfeld des Tschadsees (Sao-Kultur?) zu suchen wäre (vgl. Arnold 1980: VII-VIII). Auf mögliche Kulturkontakte mit Ostafrika und dem südlichen Kongo, z. B. auf dem Gebiet der Flecht- und Schnitztechnik wie Ornamentik, hat nach Leo Frobenius bereits Ankermann (1910: 309) hingewiesen. Ungeachtet dieser vielfältigen Beziehungen entstanden hier Kulturen ganz individueller Prägung, die sich, getragen von einer vitalen und kunstsinnigen Bevölkerung, bis in die Gegenwart zu behaupten vermochten. Während die Entdeckung der westafrikanischen Küste schon im 15. Jahrhundert erfolgte, setzte die Erforschung Innerafrikas erst zu Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts ein. Unter Benutzung der Saharastraßen gelangten wissenschaftliche Expeditionen zuerst von Norden her in die küstenfernen Regionen des späteren Kamerun, um die größtenteils islamisierten Sudanreiche zu erkunden. Die Reisen eines Heinrich Barth (1849-55), Gerhard Rohlfs (1865-67), Gustav Nachtigal (1869-74) und Eduard Flegel (1881-83), der bis Ngaundere in Adamaua vordrang, erschlossen Europa eine bis dahin fremde Welt.

La statuaire pré-Bembe, très rare, se distingue par la puissance de sa plastique cubiste. C'est Daniel Biebuyck qui identifia et regroupa sous le nom de « chasseurs pré-Bembe » les différentes entités historiquement hétérogènes de chasseurs Basikasingo, établis sur le territoire des Bembe, dans la région du Kivu oriental. Ces groupes pratiquaient le culte des ancêtres (bashumbu), fondateurs de petites entités politiques indépendantes et chefs des migrations. Les statues se présentaient en groupes - nommées et liées généalogiquement - conservés dans de petits sanctuaires placés sous l'autorité et la garde d'un chef ou d'un ancien issu d'un lignage dominant. Les invocations, prières et libations qui leur étaient consacrées devaient favoriser la bienveillance et l'aide des ancêtres. Si Biebuyck a identifié plus d'une vingtaine de groupes de « chasseurs pré-Bembe », leur statuaire présente néanmoins une réelle homogénéité stylistique, parmi laquelle se dessinent quelques courants majeurs. En 2001, Bernard de Grunne, lors de l'exposition Mains de Maîtres, à Bruxelles, différenciait ainsi trois artistes, auteurs d'une douzaine d'oeuvres dont la plupart sont aujourd'hui conservées dans des collections muséales.
