Exceptional natural stone and wood forms assembled all over the world from various eras.
These beautiful curiosities come from the core of the earth and were sculptured by water, sand and wind and became exceptional pieces of art.

'African Reflections traces the art history of Northeastern Zaire from before the first encounters with Europeans in the 1870s to the present. The earliest visitors to this region wrote accounts that stereotyped Africans in myth. These myths were then incorporated into ingenious art objects made in the early colonial period. The authors contrast the traditional design aesthetic of the peoples of Northeastern Zaire with the naturalistic and representational style of art that flourished after 1900. African Reflections is a companion to an exhibition developed by the American Museum of Natural History in 1990. More than one hundred new color photographs of objects from the American Museum's Congo Expedition of 1909-1915 are included, along with many fine archival photographs taken by Herbert Lang on the expedition. The book also includes photographs of many of the earliest known objects from this region from the collections of the British Museum, the Musee royal de l' Afrique centrale, and other major European museums, as well as color photographs of the Mangbetu people today.'
In this companion to the American Museum of Natural History's 1990 exhibit, Schildkrout and Keim use material gathered during the museum's 1909-15 Congo Expedition to explore the development of artistic styles during the first half of the 20th century. Artefacts, illustrated with crisp color plates, are placed within the context of both creators and the audiences for whom they were made. In addition, important questions are raised about the attitudes and stereotypes used in discussing non-Western art.
This is a first rate book that examines and traces the art of Northeastern Zaire. Focusing on the Mangbetu people and their art before and after the coming of the European, it is a fascinating examination of traditional styles and designs. Many fine examples of art from this region include, utilitarian objects such as harps, knifes, pots, bowls, various textiles, bark boxes and stools.
The color photographs are from The American Museum of Natural History's collection, with the text provided by the museum's curator Enid Schildkrout.
Contents :
- art, ethnography and history in Northeastern Zaire
- through western eyes, the making of the Mangbetu myth
- collecting in the Congo : the American museum expedition 1909-1915
- reconstructing the past
- Mangbetu social organization in the early colonial period
- the art and technology of daily life
- the art of adornment
- the craft of power and the art of kings
- dealing with destiny : aspects of Mangbetu thought

Dr. Schildkrout's research focuses on the changing cultures of West Africa, in particular Ghana and Nigeria. She also studies certain issues more widely in Africa-ethnicity, interpretation of material culture and African art, ecotourism and its influence on African societies-drawing heavily on museum collections and fieldwork throughout the African continent.
Dr. Schildkrout is currently conducting research among Ghanaians living in New York City, studying how new African ethnicities are created and transformed in the United States. She has worked with a group of children in New York to see how they learn to understand issues of self-identity and community. Dr. Schildkrout is focusing on the Ghanaians in New York City who come from the city of Kumasi, where she did fieldwork in the 1960s. These immigrants-Muslims from many ethnic groups-coalesce into a community in New York, which defines its ethnicity based on the members' common adherence to Islam and, distinctively, their origin from a particular community within a particular town in Ghana. Dr. Schildkrout is interested in how ethnicities are redefined and constructed in new contexts and how these identities assist people in creating opportunities along a chain of transnational migration.
Dr. Schildkrout also has an ongoing project with Research Associate Dr. Dale Rosengarten on the historical linkages and cultural congruities of African and African American basket making traditions. She has traveled to Senegal several times to conduct fieldwork for this project.

Exhibition catalogue by Jerry L. Thompson and Susan Vogel
Closeup: lessons in the art of seeing African sculpture...
New York : The Center for African Art, and Munich : Prestel
1990  1991 ?
Paperback: 194 pages
Language: English
Cloth: 0-945802-07-2, Paper: ISBN 0-945802-08-0. LCCN: 90-42065
"Photographs of superb works from two private collections are used to help the reader gain a deeper understanding of African sculpture. This publication is useful for those who want to appreciate the formal qualities of sculpture."
This book presents African art objects of exceptional aesthetic quality from an American collection and the Horstmann collection. But the book is more than an assemblage of masterpieces of African art. It is an exercise in how to look at African sculpture--and by extension--at all sculpture. This theme is fully developed in the essay and texts, and carries through the photographs which are a veritable invitation to see African sculpture in a new way. It is demonstrated that the forms of African art suggest a particular relationship to the viewer; the images express an underlying assumption that making a sculpture may be more important than displaying it for a human viewer. An essay by a noted photographer shows both detail and full views of the most complex objects with his thoughts on looking at sculpture. In the catalogue of the objects, formal analysis of the sculptures guide the eye and enrich the experience, describing points of style, design, and technique.
Contents :
- Preface by Susan Vogel
- Some Thoughts on Looking at African Sculpture by Jerry Thompson
- African Sculpture : A Primer by Susan Vogel
- Descriptive catalogue of the two collections by Susan Vogel
- Ethnological notes on the objects by Anne D'Alleva
