patterning, the calabash has no rival."
"Penetrating every facet of life, the calabash as a symbol has been woven
into myths and proverbs throughout the continent. The Hausa and the Fulani have
as many as twenty-three individual words for the calabash. To the Fulani, a
gourd filled with smaller gourds is like the sky filled with stars. The Hausa
identify the universe as a spherical gourd, one half of which holds the sky,
while the other half holds the earth and the seas. Where they meet is the
horizon line, the point of harmony between the two. The Gurunsi in Burkina Faso
see the rounded calabash as a symbol of life's circular pattern (birth, coming
of age, marriage, and death) and of nature's limitless seasons."

members of the association loaned 135 works for an exhibition at the Rijksmuseum
Kroller-Muller. Superb objects from western and central Africa and from
Melanesia were drawn from members' collections for this exhibition, perhaps
unexcelled among exhibitions drawn solely from private collections.
This beautiful catalogue (small folio-size, 8"x 12") of the exhibition contains
several very well-written essays (in English and Dutch) and lovely, large

Louis Perrois, ethnologue français spécialisé dans l'étude des arts africains
traditionnels, a été chercheur à l'Orstom ( Office de la recherche scientifique
et technique outre-mer), organisme d'Etat, devenu depuis peu Institut de
recherche pour le développement) de 1964 à 1998.
Directeur de recherche, il a longtemps exercé dans cette institution des
responsabilités de chef de mission scientifique en Afrique sub-saharienne - à
Libreville et Yaoundé -, d'animateur d'unité de recherche en ethno-archéologie,
et, à la direction générale, de directeur de l'information scientifique, chargé
des éditions, de la documentation et de l'audiovisuel, de 1988 à 1995.
Formé dans les années 60 à l'université de Paris-Sorbonne et au Musée de
l'Homme par le grand ethno-préhistorien André Leroi-Gourhan, professeur à
l'Institut d'Ethonologie puis au Collège de France, et par l'ethnologue
africaniste Denise Paulme, il est docteur en ethnologie depuis 1970 avec une
thèse traitant de la sculpture des Fang d'Afrique équatoriale.
Ayant séjourné au Gabon de 1965 à 1975, il a été plusieurs années responsable
du Musée des arts et traditions du Gabon que les chercheurs de l'Orstom avait
créé dès 1963, et qui deviendra musée national en 1976.
Louis Perrois a publié le résultat de ses recherches au Gabon dans plusieurs
mémoires et ouvrages dont notamment :

Louis Perrois a également été affecté au Cameroun, de 1978 à 1984, où il a pu
mener des enquêtes ethno-historiques et ethno-esthétiques, dans les provinces de
l'Ouest et du Nord-Ouest (Grassland) en collaboration avec l'historien
camerounais Jean-Paul Notué - lui-même docteur en histoire de l'université de
Paris 1 et actuellement maître de conférences à l'université de Yaoundé . Deux
ouvrages sont issus de cette recherche conduite en étroite coopération
franco-africaine :

Par ailleurs, une étude ethno-linguistique sur la culture matérielle des
Koma-Gimbé du Nord-Cameroun, fruit d'une recherche de terrain effectuée dans les
Monts Alantika avec le linguiste du CNRS Michel Dieu (+), est en cours de
rédaction.
Louis Perrois a été responsable scientifique ou contributeur-expert de
nombreuses expositions sur les cultures et les arts de l'Afrique noire ou plus
précisément du Gabon et du Cameroun, tant à Libreville qu'à Paris, Marseille,
Bordeaux, Caen, Hildenstein, Rotterdam, Londres, New York, Washington, Ottawa,
Dallas, et Los Angeles.
Dans le domaine de l'enseignement supérieur, Louis Perrois qui est docteur
habilité à diriger des recherches de l'université de Paris-Panthéon Sorbonne, a
animé des séminaires de recherche et assuré un encadrement doctoral à la
Sorbonne (1970), à l'ICCROM à Rome (1986), au Musée de l'Homme (1987-1989 et
1994-1995), au Museum national d'histoire naturelle et au Centre de recherches
africaines de l'université de Paris 1 (1996-1998).
L'essentiel de ses prises de position théoriques en matière d'anthropologie
de l'art est présenté dans Arts de l'Afrique Noire (dans la collection
Barbier-Mueller), ouvrage de synthèse collectif dirigé par Werner Schmalenbach,
publié en 1988 par les éditions Nathan à Paris, Prestel Verlag à Düsseldorf
(Afrikanische Kunst -aus der Sammlung...) et Barbier-Mueller Museum à Genève
(African Art - from the Barbier- Mueller à Genève ) ainsi que dans Patrimoines
du Sud, collections du Nord, ed. Orstom, Paris, 1997, où est esquissé le bilan
des trente années de recherche à propos des arts plastiques de l'Afrique noire.
Auteur de quelques dizaines d'articles scientifiques et de vulgarisation, co-organisateur
de colloques sur les arts africains (Musée national des Arts d'Afrique et
d'Océanie, Paris, 1990 et 1993), conférencier, Louis Perrois a également co-réalisé
plusieurs films de télévision traitant des civilisations anciennes du Gabon dont

were said to possess certain powers. Manipulation of these naked female and
male figures was believed to resuscitate the dead. French ethnologist Perrois and Spanish art historian Delage set these
statues in the context of Fang religion, which includes secret initiation
societies, witchcraft and ritual sacrifice. They discuss the Fangs'
migrations from savannahs to jungles and trace expeditions into West Africa
by European explorers and ethnologists from the late 19th century to the
1940s. Also showcased in color and black-and-white illustrations are
ceremonial masks, brass collars worn by men and women, and canes in the form
of human figures. The book brings to light an art that reached its high

that the swedish ethnographer Karl Edward Laman collected in the field together
with the objects in the very beginning of the 20. century, and which are
translated and edited by Wyatt MacGaffey.
