Unique items feature in this catalogue of Doris and Eric Beyersdorf Collection of African Art which was auctioned.
The Beyersdorf's were passionate collectors of comtemporary and modern art. They became aware of African sculpture during visits to Armand Arman's New York studio.

The front cover and inside pages show a superb Chokwe figure of a chief from the period before 1850 which was listed at £250,000-350,000. The only Fang head reliquary with a square neck was listed at £80,000-120,000, while a rare Dogon equestrian figure was listed at £15,000-25,000.

Based on extensive research in West Africa, Christopher Steiner's book presents a richly detailed description of the economic networks that transfer art objects from their site of use and production in Africa to their point of consumption in art galleries and shops throughout Europe and America. Considering the ubiquitous presence of pottery in Africa, a comprehensive survey of the ceramic traditions of Africa translated into English is long overdue. This book does not and is not intended to meet that need. Rather, it is an introductory overview to the subject utilizing photos of pottery from the Ethnography Department collection of the British Museum, where Barley is an assistant keeper. Barley organizes the text into short chapters, focusing on major themes of pottery production, materials, form, style, decoration, and cultural meaning. The content of the chapters is sketchy, and the supporting evidence provided is frequently anecdotal in character rather than insightful. Also, while the pottery illustrated is fairly representative of the entire continent, the text generally emphasizes West Africa and, oddly, gives detailed attention to North Africa. Keeping in mind its limitations, this work is recommended for public and academic libraries, particularly as a fine source of photos showing a diverse collection of African pots. Eugene C. Barley's survey presents an authoritative ethnographic perspective on African pottery, but the book's stunning images may be appreciated sheerly for their aesthetic impact. Many exquisite vessels from the British Museum's collection are pictured, mainly unglazed ceramic jugs, water jars, and sculptural vessels. Barley discusses a range of forming and firing techniques and delves into the social implications affecting potters in their communities. In a central segment, Barley compares the functions and ritual uses of pottery across the African continent. But ethnography aside, it is a pleasure to examine these inventive, robust forms. Their incised decorations and highly burnished surfaces are stirring reminders of the remarkable cultural heritage of Africa's diverse peoples.

Il met l’accent sur les statuettes sculptées, soit pour servir d’intermédiaires entres les vivants et les esprits des mondes naturel et surnaturel, soit pour représenter l’esprit du compagnon du sexe opposé que chaque individu possède dans l’autre monde.

Les Baoulé sont convaincus que derrière les évènements et les crises de l’existence se tient un monde caché de causes surnaturelles qu’on ne peut percer que par la divination et amadouer que par des offrandes propitiatoires appropriées. Ces causes sont partout, n’importe où sans qu’il soit possible de les reconnaître avant que ne se produise l’événement ; le système de protection se situant au sein des masques, statuettes, autels, bracelets et autres amulettes.

De toutes les divinités, les formes spirituelles, les fétiches, seul les asie usu et le blolo sont vus sous la forme d’être humains, homme ou femme et de ce fait, représentés sous cet aspect, ce qui les différencie fondamentalement des autres divinités et esprits. Le Baoulé considère ces sculptures non pas en tant qu’épouse/époux de l’autre monde mais en tant que femme ou homme de l’autre monde. Ce personnage n’en est pas moins identifié comme un véritable amant/maîtresse Des photos prises in situ mettent en scène les figurines sur leurs autels.

On observe que l’art Baoulé a donné naissance à une statuaire dite de « colons » particulièrement dynamique où les sujets revêtent l’attirail vestimentaire des européens (casque colonial, tenue sportive, robe occidentale, cravate)

P. Ravenhill établit dans sa conclusion qu’il existe un rapport conceptuel entre l’ asie usu et le blolo des Baoulé et les minkisi du bas Zaïre, ou, selon MacGaffey, la création de la forme est la reconnaissance de la personnalité existentielle des ces esprits, de ces êtres débordant d’activité qui choisissent d’entrer de plain-pied dans la vie des humains et exigent d’être honorés, logés, nourris !
