cette vente, il a légué une partie importante de sa collection au Musée des Arts
Africains et Océaniens de Marseille mais certains de ses objets se trouvent
aujourd’hui aussi au musée du Quai Branly.

Falgayrettes-Leveau, directrice du musée Dapper à Paris, est l'incontestable
spécialiste. Pourquoi les hommes ont-ils utilisé cet "écran", ce "relais"
pour s'identifier aux génies et aux dieux, pour se construire un deuxième
visage et se recréer une nouvelle personnalité ? C'est à cette question que
répond Masques, avec une centaine d'illustrations qui appuient la subtile
démonstration de Christiane Falgayrettes-Leveau. Les photos des masques

publions ici " Présentation ethnologique ", la deuxième partie de l'ouvrage,
qui conserve un grand intérêt : de nombreuses pièces reproduites ont été
détruites ou ont aujourd'hui disparu. L'étude du masque dans ses aspects
fonctionnels et plastiques permet d'appréhender l'origine des thèses du
grand ethnologue sur l'unité culturelle de l'Afrique, tout en témoignant de
sa reconnaissance de la valeur des civilisations africaines.

An exhibition of superb African masks drawn mainly from its own collection was
mounted in late 1995 at the Musee Dapper.
This catalogue of the exhibition includes not only splendid, large photographs
of the masks and an exemplary text (in French) that discusses the stylistic
differences and functions of the masks and a previously unpublished manuscript
written in 1898 by Leo Frobenius. Titled Les Masques et les Societes Secrets
d"Afrique, Frobenius" manuscript is accompanied by scores of drawings--of masks
and dancers--excecuted in the late 19th century.

Peintre né le 1er juillet 1888 à Florence et mort à Meudon le 21 avril 1971,
Alberto Magnelli joua un rôle important dans le domaine de l'abstraction.
Ses parents prospères commerçants espéraient le voir leur succéder. Il fit
donc des études techniques tout en se consacrant seul à la peinture après avoir
découvert les œuvres de Masaccio, Uccello et Piero Della Francesca dont les
peintures lui révélèrent la composition le jeu des vides et des pleins.
En 1913, Magnelli fréquenta les artistes futuristes Boccioni, Marinetti,
Carra et Papini mais n'adhéra pas à leur groupe. Au cours d'un séjour à Paris
l'année suivante, il fit la connaissance de Max Jacob, Apollinaire, Picasso,
Léger, Gris et Archipenko. Toutefois, au cours de cette période, il peignait
encore des œuvres figuratives tout en engageant des recherches sur la
composition spatiale, le découpage de la forme, des aplats et des cernes en
appliquant un langage synthétique. Ce ne fut qu'en 1915, un an après son retour
en Italie, qu'il peignit des tableaux résolument abstraits en les désignant des
termes "art inventé".
De 1920 à 1930, lorsque l'Europe fut confrontée aux incertitudes d'après-guerre,
il revint à la représentation du monde réel sans toutefois renoncer totalement à
l'abstraction en représentant des objets par des signes colorés cernés de blanc.
Revenu à Paris en 1931, il y eut droit à une exposition personnelle en 1934 à
la Galerie Pierre puis montra ses œuvres à New York en 1937. Ce fut lors d'un
voyage à Carrare qu'il entreprit de créer en 1931 la série dite des "Pierres" ou
des "Pierres éclatées" après avoir été frappé par la vision des blocs de marbre
entassés dans les carrières. A partir de 1935, il parvint à un accomplissement
de son langage abstrait. Durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Magnelli chercha
refuge près de Grasse où il se retrouva en compagnie de Sonia Delaunay, Jean Arp
et Sophie Taueber. Il travailla alors intensément le noir, le brun et le bleu.
A la fin de la guerre, la Galerie d'Art moderne de Grasse organisa une
exposition de ses oeuvres au moment où il commença à exercer son influence sur
de nombreux peintres, notamment Gilioli, Mortensen, Deyrolle ou Vasarely.
Il montra ses tableaux en 1949 à Paris lors de l'exposition sur les "Maîtres
de l'Art Abstrait" puis la Biennale de Venise lui consacra une salle l'année
suivante. Il eut ensuite droit à une rétrospective à Bruxelles en 1954 puis au
musée d'Eindhoven et au musée Grimaldi d'Antibes en 1955 et participa alors à
d'autres nombreuses manifestations. A la fin de sa carrière, Magnelli chercha à
accentuer la simplicité de la forme dans ses œuvres tout en manifestant son
amour de la vie sans jamais se départir d'une discrétion qu'il cultiva tout au
long de son existence.

Kuba cloth is woven from the fiber of the Raphia Vinifera Palm. Production of
these textiles is a multiple stage process which involves the participation of
children, men and women of the same clan. The process includes gathering and
preparing the raffia fibers for weaving and embroidery, weaving the basic cloth
unit, dyeing the embroidery fibers, and embellishing the woven cloth with
embroidery, applique, patchwork and dye.
After the fibers are gathered and stripped by hand or with the aid of a
stripping comb, the basic cloth unit is produced by men on a single heddle loom.
The basic cloth units woven measure approximately 26 x 28", a size determined by
the natural length of the raffia fibers. After weaving, the cloth units are
sometimes dyed and sometimes softened by repeated wetting and pounding in a
mortar.
These velvet units are prestige items, rarely worn but used as signs of wealth
during life and at death. To make one could sometimes take up to a year. After
the men had made the basic fabric, women then applied two decorative techniques,
embroidery (a further stitching onto the base material) and plush or cut pile.
The last one is achieved by inserting very fine raffia fibers, one at a time,
through the interstices of the fabric. This was done so densely that they stay
in place, they were not tied. Then a sharp knife was used to cut these fibers
short and the result is a soft and flat texture.

Les auteurs : Douglas Newton est né en Malaisie et fit ses études à Londres. Entré, en
1957, au Museum of Primitive Art de New-York, fondé par Nelson A.
Rockefeller, il en devint le directeur en 1973. Lorsque, en 1975,
Rockefeller fit don de sa collection au Metropolitan Museum of Art, Douglas
Newton fut nommé président de son département des arts d’Afrique, d’Océanie
et des Amériques. Il y conçut et organisa près de 70 expositions. Il se
retira en 1990 et continua une carrière d’expert. Son infatigable curiosité
l’amena à visiter de très nombreuses collections publiques et privées dans
le monde, même les plus insignifiantes en apparence. Douglas Newton a écrit
de très nombreux textes de référence sur le sujet, article sur l’Océanie
pour l’Encyclopedia Britannica, introduction de l’Art Océanien (Citadelles &
Mazenod, 1993). Parmi ses ouvrages, plusieurs sont consacrés à l’art de la
Nouvelle Guinée où il a poursuivi ses recherches sur le terrain de 1964 à
1973. On peut citer Art styles of the Papuan Gulf (Museum of the Primitive
Art, 1961), Crocodile and Cassowary (Museum of the Primitive Art, 1971),
Massim Art of the Massim Area (Museum of the Primitive Art, 1975).
Le musée Fondé en 1977, le musée est installé au cœur de la Vieille Ville
de Genève. Il a pour vocation de conserver, d'étudier et de publier une
collection commencée par Josef Mueller dès 1907 et poursuivie jusqu'à nos
jours par ses héritiers. Cette collection compte aujourd'hui plusieurs
milliers de pièces et comprend des œuvres d'art de l'Antiquité tribale et
classique, ainsi que des sculptures, tissus, ornements provenant des
civilisations dites "primitives" du monde entier. Nombre de ces pièces sont
considérées comme des chefs-d'oeuvre incontournables. Le musée Barbier-Mueller s'est acquis une reconnaissance internationale par
des expositions itinérantes, des prêts consentis à d'autres musées et par la
publication de nombreux catalogues et livres d'art. Trois points essentiels
le particularisent : Les collections ont commencé après la 1ère guerre
mondiale, ce qui explique la forte présence de pièces "historiques",
introuvables aujourd'hui. Cette collection privée est la plus importante au monde. Le musée publie
constamment de nouveaux ouvrages pour accompagner ses expositions dans le
monde (dans 72 musées en 25 ans).

Han Coray (1880-1974) (whose name is also linked to many of the works in the
Paolo Morigi collection), was one of the greatest turn-of-the-century collectors
of African art and the first in Switzerland to exhibit these objects as works of
art in their own right. In 1917 one of his Zurich galleries hosted the very
first exhibition by the Dada movement, which also included a number of items of
art nègre. The exhibition caught the interest of the artistic avant-garde in
Europe, in particular Hans Arp, Tristan Tzara and Hans Richter. He acquired his
collection for the most part from the famous Parisian art dealer Paul Guillaume
in the first half of the 1920's. This extensive collection of African art, one
of the finest in the world, was purchased by Zurich University's
Volkerkundemuseum in 1940.
