The front cover of this Christie's London Tribal Art auction catalogue features a fine and rare Mangbetu tribe harp from the Congo which was offered at £20,000-30,000. Tribal art from Oceania and the Americas is also featured.

Another outstanding piece pictured inside is a superb Tlingit horn and walrus ivory spoon from the Northwest coast of America which was carved in the first half of the 19th century. It was listed at £30,00-40,000.

Property from the estate of the late Dame Margot Fonteyn de Arias in the form of 15 lots from Costa Rica were also on offer.

Preface

It is a privilege for the Guggenheim Museum to celebrate the extraordinary contribution of the African continent to the world's visual culture. This exhibition includes works ranging from the tools and rock art of early humankind to objects produced well into the twentieth century. While the primary emphasis in the selection has been aesthetic, the installation presents the works of art in a geographical and historical context and offers descriptions of their cultural uses and symbolic meanings insofar as these are known to scholars.

In exploring the rich variety of African artworks, the visitor will note that certain patterns of meaning and use occur again and again over much of the African continent. Indeed, many of the themes and forms presented here including images of woman and child, memorial statuary, symbols of status and prestige, shrine objects, and works associated with initiation are found in nearly all world civilizations throughout most of history. Also evident in all sections of the show are items of personal use textiles, ceramics, furniture craft objects in origin, perhaps, but frequently works of exceptional aesthetic merit. As with all exhibitions, this exploration of the arts of the African continent is a construction. It reflects the ideas and attitudes aesthetic, historical, and cultural of the curators who selected and organized the works of art and the scholars who composed the explanatory labels and captions. Art of the Baga: A drama of Cultural Reinvention has been organized by The Museum for African Art, New York in cooperation with The Baltimore Museum of Art.
No African group is more admired by collectors and artists of the West, yet elusive and obscure, than the Baga people of Guinea, West Africa.
For four hundred years, the Baga and their ancestors have been known through the writings of visitors to the West African coast. Still, the content and meaning of their art and the structure of their society have remained a mystery until the present research leading to this exhibition and catalogue. Living in their insular world on the coast; surrounded by inlets form the sea and vast rice swamps, these intriguing people have managed to create a social cohesion and a magnificent body of art throughout the centuries despite continuous aggression against them by larger, more powerful groups of people inland. Through a series of more potentially devastating circumstances to the present day, the Baga have responded with remarkable flexibility and innovation to create watersheds of cultural reinvention.
Events of the 1950s to 1980s nearly wiped out Baga artistic culture and ritual, yet a renewal has again begun, coinciding fortuitously with the first extensive research ever to conducted in the area.

It examines their attempt to conserve their own religious ritual, to the eventual destruction of their traditions at mid century with the conversion to Islam and, with independence from France, the establishment of the Republic of Guinea under an iconoclastic Marxist regime.

In this book, the Baga voice is heard in the direct testimony of three Baga writers and forty Baga consultants of all ages and background experience, from ten-year-old boys to elders and ritual leaders of over 100 years of age. Baga traditional leaders see themselves as the creators of their own spiritual world, revealing an extraordinary belief in their own creations. A historical tension exists between youth and elders, giving rise to the appropriation and reinvention of the art and ritual of the elders by the youth, often approaching sacrilege and the defiance of strict prohibitions. Today, the Baga strive to renew their traditions as a manifestation of their cultural worth.

Jacques Kerchache en a réuni ici un ensemble exceptionnel, de 34 sculptures dites Botchio.
Ce livre va enfin vous permettre de découvrir ces fétiches chargés de rentrer en contact avec l’au-delà.
En effet, ces Botchio, font parti des rites vaudou.
Sculptés dans des branches d'arbre, ces statuettes anthropomorphes protègent villages et habitations du Bénin.
L’auteur accompagne les illustrations d’informations ethnographiques puisées aux récits des premiers voyageurs.
Le catalogue présente une majorité d’objets très érodés où l’on remarque comment l’artiste a su utiliser la forme originelle des troncs et s’en rendre complice : un travail élaboré et fruit d’une recherche esthétique réelle.
Le "Botchio" a une fonction magique consistant à éloigner les mauvais esprits et protège un village, une famille, un individu de tous les dangers. Il est à la fois gardien et garant de l'harmonie.
Toutes les sculptures de l'exposition ont probablement été exécutées entre le XVIIIème et la première partie du XXème siècle.
