Raymond A. Silverman
Ethiopia: Traditions of Creativity
Michigan State University Museum
Publisher: University of Washington Press
1999
Taschenbuch
ISBN: 0295-97740-X
ISBN 13: 978-0295-97740-9
While classicists have long been interested in the ancient Ethiopian empires at
Meroe and Aksum, and Medievalists continue to study the almost 2000-year-old
tradition of Ethiopian Orthodox Christian art, Africanists have largely
overlooked the rich diversity of the indigenous visual culture of northeast
Africa. This volume, accompanying an exhibition curated by Silverman, seeks to
rectify this scholarly oversight with an anthology of illustrated essays by a
distinguished group of anthropologists, historians, and art historians. Unlike
most African art studies, this one focuses primarily on individual, named
artists e.g., wood sculptors, basket makers, metalworkers, potters, church
muralists, and modern painters. Wide-ranging if not all-inclusive, the text
reveals much about the scope of Ethiopia's artistry. And although each essay is
accompanied by a few field and object photographs, this is no coffee-table art
book. Highly recommended for all academic libraries because of its scholarship
and unique topical focus.
Ethiopia is one of the world`s great crossroads, where the peoples and cultures
of Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean have been interacting for
thousands of years. The resulting ethnic and cultural diversitiy has given rise
to many unique and dynamic aesthetic traditions. "Ethiopia: Traditions of
Creativity" presents the work of fifteen contemporary Ethiopian artists and
essays on Ethiopia`s artisctic traditions by twelve scholars from various
countries and academic disciplines.

Book Description:
The National Museum of African Art began as a private educational institution in
1964 and became part of the Smithsonian Institution in 1979.
This volume includes highlights from the museum's holdings of traditional
African art from throughout the continent, although the majority of works
originated in sub-Saharan Africa. The 150 objects presented include sculpted
masks and figures, regalia, items of personal adornment, textiles, furniture,
and household objects. Each entry provides a discussion about the object's
meaning and use and includes provenance and publication history.
Fully illustrated in color, the handbook also includes maps, an extensive
bibliography, and an introduction by Roy Sieber, America's foremost authority on
traditional African art.

A Sangha, terre
foisonnants, entrainant d'importantes mutations sociales qui devraient
s'inscrire sur les masques.

Kilengi: African Art from the Bareiss Family Collection (Hardcover)
Publisher: University of Washington Press
1999
Language: English
ISBN: 0295978228
From Library Journal:
"Kilengi is a Bantu term meaning "joy arising through
beauty," a telling insight into the importance of art in Africa. This
catalog in coffee-table format was produced to accompany a travelling
exhibition of Walter Bareiss's African art collection, previously in Iowa
City and now in Purchase, NY. The collection, although only recently
assembled, is intriguing because of its high quality and because it focuses
on East and South Africa, regions often overlooked. Roy's introduction
incisively criticizes scholars' and collectors' overemphasis of West African
art. His essay describing the major categories of objects represented in the
collection is not innovative in approach but will be useful for the general
reader. This book's greatest strength lies in both George Meister's
exquisite photography, which highlights the visual power of the collected
objects, and in Roy's extensively researched catalog entries. Overall, this
is a visually stunning, very reasonably priced publication; highly
recommended for any library with an interest in African art." Eugene C. Burt,
Art Inst. of Seattle Lib., WA
Dozens of sumptuous color plates.
"To the northern Bantu tribes "kilengi"
means joy arising through beauty. Kilengi includes superb photographs of art
objects from throughout Africa. The book presents extraordinary works from
well-known regions as well as new discoveries and objects that challenge
long-standing conceptions of African art. Christopher Roy includes a
masterly introduction to the problems of the presentation of traditional
African art. Much of the most unusual material is from eastern and southern
Africa. This is an area about which very little has been known until
recently, and there has been very little published on the art from the
region. A large selection of pieces from the Democratic Republic of Congo is
also of special interest. Essays and lengthy commentaries discuss the
meaning of each piece for the creators."

Inventing Masks: Agency and History in the Art of the Central Pende
Univ of Chicago Pr
1999
376 pages
Softcover
6.75x9.75x0.75 inches
Z. S. Strother spent nearly three years in Zaire studying Pende sculpture. Her
research reveals the rich history and lively contemporary practice of Central
Pende masquerade. She describes the intensive collaboration among sculptors and
dancers that is crucial to inventing masks. Sculptors revealed that a central
theme in their work is the representation of perceived differences between men
and women. Far from being unchanging, Pende masquerades promote unceasing
innovation within genres and invention of new genres.
"Inventing Masks" demonstrates, through first hand accounts and lavish
illustrations, how Central Pende masquerading is a contemporary art form fully
responsive to twentieth-century experience. "Its presentation, its exceptionally
lively style, the perfection of its illustrations make this a stunning book,
perfectly fitting for the study of a performing art and its content is indeed
seminal. A breakthrough."—Jan Vansina

Given ongoing international debates about health and health care, it seems both
appropriate and timely to consider the ways that non-Western cultures have
conceived of, visualized, and treated sickness and health. To Cure and Protect
presents sculptures, masks, amulets, and other objects used as part of healing
traditions in sub-Saharan Africa, both to cure disease and to prevent future
affliction.
