Avec une réunion unique de sculptures des peuples kôngo, le musée Dapper décline, pour la première fois, la thématique du geste dans la statuaire. Tout en rappelant l'importance de la culture kôngo et de sa très grande influence en Amérique, l'ouvrage éclaire la symbolique des mouvements et des positions du corps. L'ensemble des objets porte, à travers les gestes, les signes unificateurs et les croyances des peuples kôngo.
En choisissant de mettre en scène les signes corporels, le musée Dapper propose un élargissement de la perception des pièces d'arts africains, où le geste fait partie du sens de l'objet. Avec des pratiques esthétiques d'une grande richesse, la production plastique des Kôngo constitue un langage, un discours métaphysique, voire idéologique, proposé à la collectivité. Le monde et la vie s'y décodent comme dans une encyclopédie, chaque élément de l'espace terrestre ou cosmique étant soigneusement expliqué. Au cours des cinq siècles écoulés, les peuples kôngo ont suscité de nombreux témoignages, faisant de ce groupe l'un des plus étudiés et des plus connus du continent africain. Vivant principalement au Congo, en République démocratique du Congo, avec une extension en Angola et au Gabon, les Kôngo réunissent de nombreux peuples, principalement les Kôngo proprement dits, les Vili, les Wôyo, les Bêmbé, dont les liens linguistiques, historiques et culturels sont extrêmement forts. Ils entretiennent aussi des relations étroites avec de proches voisins, tels les Téké. Doués du pouvoir d'exprimer la tradition par des gestes et des signes, mémoire et reflet des expériences vécues, les Kôngo considèrent que la gestuelle ouvre à la compréhension du monde et de soi-même. tus que des formes transitoirement données au corps, les gestes kôngo sont, au plus fort de leur expression, de véritables incantations. L'importante culture du royaume de Kongo a été transmise par le langage corporel. Les attitudes, de même que les positions qu'emprunte la statuaire, révèlent un vaste répertoire où chaque partie du corps, y compris les yeux et la bouche, participe d'une gestuelle des plus élaborées, avec des traits récurrents : position debout, semi fléchie, agenouillée, bras levé, mains sur les hanches. Des millions d'esclaves africains transplantés aux Amériques entre 1500 et 1870, plus d'un tiers venaient du Kongo ou d'Angola. L'influence de l'art kôngo s'est ainsi diffusée dans toutes les Amériques noires à travers la danse, la musique et la gestuelle. Cette exposition offre la possibilité de voir réunies pour la première fois des pièces majeures conservées dans de grands musées (tant en France qu'à l'étranger) et dont quelques-unes d'entre elles ont été rarement présentées au public.
Chaque oeuvre a été sélectionnée pour son attitude ou pour son geste représentatifs, mais aussi pour la qualité ou l'originalité de sa facture. Des grandes sculptures impressionnantes, hérissées de clous ou de lames en fer, aux statuettes d'un naturalisme raffiné, toutes les pièces traduisent une esthétique forte qui ne peut laisser indifférent. Animé par la volonté d'élargir le champ des arts africains anciens aux expressions contemporaines de l'Afrique et de ses diasporas, le projet annoncé lors de l'ouverture et mené depuis deux ans connaît, après plusieurs manifestations, un bilan positif.
Cet ouvrage aborde à travers la sculpture le langage du corps d'un groupe important de l'Afrique subsaharienne, les Kôngo. Ils vivent principalement au Congo, avec une extension au Gabon et en Angola. Les attitudes, de même que les positions empruntées par les statues, couvrent un champ très large où chaque partie du corps, y compris les yeux et la bouche, participe d'une gestuelle des plus élaborées, qui dit le monde terrestre et cosmique.

This work examines the philosophy and arts of the Kongo, one of the most notable cultures of sub-Saharan Africa. Here, body attitudes cover a broad array of meanings. Each part of the body, including the eyes and the mouth, relates to an elaborate gestural language that references both the terrestrial and cosmic worlds. These gestures are reflected in the statuary of the culture, which is well represented in the exhibition at the Musée Dapper, for which this book serves as a catalogue. The exhibition contains one of the finest collections of Kongo and Bembe sculpture assembled in recent memory, and thebook documents each piece beautifully with color photographs, primarily by Hughes Dubois, R. Asselberghs, and Ian Churchill. Additional essays trace the gestural tradition into the African diaspora.

Book Review:
An intricate maze of rivers and islands cuts across southern Nigeria's Niger Delta, a region subject to floods, tides, and tropical downpours that continually alter its geography. While these waterways serve to separate the many ethnic groups dwelling in this aqueous environment -- each with its own unique cultural traditions and often its language -- they have also long been employed as routes of transmission and trade. Delta men and women traversed the region in canoes long before the Portuguese arrived at its shores in the fifteenth century. Their ideas and art forms -- including some of the largest wood sculptures and most vibrant masquerades in all of Africa -- travelled with them, being adopted, adapted, and sometimes appropriated in the process. European influence has also been keenly felt, and Western artifacts and articles of dress appear in shrines, regalia, and masquerades. "De Lega leven in het oosten van de Democratische Republiek Kongo. Tot voor enkele decennia maakten zij sculpturen die door wetenschappers en kunstliefhebbers worden gerekend tot de hoogtepunten van de kunst van zwart Afrika. A particular tribe's masks, statues, utensils, furniture and jewellery are then surveyed for their ritual and aesthetic significance. The results are striking and varied.

Après avoir situé très rapidement le pays dogon au sein de l'espace malien, le développement s'attachera à montrer ce que revêt exactement (ou d'un point de vue topographique) l'appellation Falaise de Bandiagara. Cette entrée permettra dès les premières pages d'amener le lecteur à comprendre pourquoi certains sites architecturaux ont été construits sur les parois abruptes de la falaise alors que d'autres sont aux pieds de cette dernière. Cf. partie IV sur l'architecture. Le contexte historique sera abordé en replaçant d'abord l'espace dogon au sein du Mali à travers les textes arabes puis sera suivi d'un développement sur l'empire du Mali pour amener aux migrations Xe et XIVe siècles des Dogon. On rappellera très brièvement les peuplements précédents Toloy et Tellem.

L'image du continent africain s'est façonnée sur un sentiment alliant méfiance et fascination, qui prévaut encore lorsque l'ethnologue Marcel Griaule part pour la mission Niger-Lac Iro en 1938-1939. Des objets sont rapportés pour le compte d'un riche collectionneur, Jean Lebaudy. Déposés à l'Institut d'ethnologie de Strasbourg dans les années 1960, ces poulies, statues, masques issus de multiples cultures deviennent objets d'étude. Au-delà des Dogon, la question plus globale de la perception des objets d'art africain dans les pays occidentaux est posée.
Cet ouvrage, écrit dans un esprit pluridisciplinaire, raconte une histoire des pièces collectées, de leur conservation, de leur place dans les musées, et propose d'apporter un regard différent sur ces objets.

Enfin un ouvrage universitaire sur le pays Dogon qui prend le temps de poser les bases nécessaires pour comprendre la fascination que l’art africain exerce sur les européens. Il fallait sans doute pour cela qu’il soit pris en charge par des étudiants qui pensaient que Dakar-Djibouti était une épreuve sportive et Griaule, le nom d’une danse folklorique.

Dogon, mais encore… Objets d’Afrique collections d’Europe paru aux très sérieuses éditions d’art Somogy, a été conçu par les étudiants de la MST "Métiers de l’exposition" de Rennes 2. Le premier atout de cet ouvrage est sans conteste son approche pluridisciplinaire, puisque ces commissaires d’exposition en herbe ont su bien s’entourer. Outre les nombreux partenariats nécessaires à la réalisation du livre et de l’exposition qui a précédé sa parution, les auteurs des articles présentés dans Dogon, mais encore sont entre autres : Geneviève Calame-Griaule, la fille de l’ethnologue Marcel Griaule, qui a dirigé la collecte des objets africains présentés dans la partie catalogue. Les douze étudiants qui ont porté le projet de publication, ont poussé les réflexions pour exploiter d’une manière globalisante, la collection Lebaudy, propriété de l’institut d’Ethnologie de l’Université de Strasbourg II. Nonobstant son intérêt esthétique et ethnologique, ils s’interrogent dans l’ouvrage sur la manière dont les objets africains sont exposés aujourd’hui. Question qui s’ancre dans l’actualité avec l’ouverture dans deux ans à Paris du Musée des Arts premiers rebaptisé Musée du quai Branly (aucun historien d’art ou anthropologue n’admettaient la première appellation). Nombre de musées français possèdent des objets d’art africains dont les provenances sont très diverses (legs de militaires, d’administrateurs ou de commerçants des anciennes colonies françaises d’Afrique) et de valeurs inégales. Ces collections méritent d’être inventoriées pour en retracer l’histoire, relier les œuvres entre elles (objets de la vie quotidienne, parures, armes, objets rituels, trophées coloniaux…) et les sortir d’un anonymat culturel. C’est donc à cette tâche que se sont attelé notre groupe d’étudiants pour rappeler que ces objets sont avant tout les témoins privilégiés de cultures localisés dans le temps et l’espace.

Le pays Dogon, situé dans la boucle du Niger au centre du Mali dans la région des falaises de Bandiagara, s’est fait connaître grâce aux missions scientifiques de l’ethnologue Marcel Griaule. Il est tombé amoureux des mythes et des rites du peuple Dogon, aussi riches et foisonnant que nos mythologies européennes. En 1938, l’ethnologue part pour la mission Niger-Lac Iro, d’où des objets sont rapportés pour le compte d’un riche collectionneur, Jean Lebaudy, qui finance l’expédition. Les masques Kanaga, le couvercle de l’urne sao, les statuettes dege,… présentés dans le livre, sont issus de différentes cultures d’Afrique de l’Ouest et principalement Dogon. Dès les années soixante, ils vont devenir des objets d’étude dans un cadre pédagogique et scientifique. Le peuple Dogon constitué par de nombreuses ethnies africaines, s’inscrit dans la tradition de l’oralité, et c’est ce qui a encouragé Griaule à tenter de tout retranscrire lors de ses nombreux voyages. Il apparaît comme un visionnaire dans sa manière de procéder en mission sur le terrain. Il est le père d’une ethnologie qui cherche à utiliser des cumuls de compétence et à aborder la culture Dogon par une vision globalisante. Dogon, mais encore… s’inscrit donc dans la même lignée en proposant un sommaire riche et relativement complet : la question de la place de l’art africain dans les collections, l’anthropologie aux Beaux-Arts, la description de la mission Lebaudy-Griaule par la fille de l’ethnologue, la problématique de la restauration et quelques repères sur l’histoire des Dogon, sur Marcel Griaule et le futur musée parisien. Tout cela en plus du catalogue détaillé des 80 pièces de la collection sortie des oubliettes. Que de bonnes raisons pour ouvrir ce livre d’art, aussi pédagogique que pointu.

L'exposition Afrique secrète fait écho aux questions que suscitent ces arts enfin reconnus et devenus de plus en plus familiers au grand publie. Cependant, si les ethnologues, les anthropologues et les historiens de l'art lèvent un coin du voile, il n'en demeure pas moins que bien des zones d'ombre subsistent encore.

L'exposition, qui réunit une centaine de pièces provenant toutes du musée Dapper, s'articule autour de deux thèmes clés : les rites dus aux défunts en Afrique équatoriale et l'univers initiatique en Afrique de l'Ouest.

La première partie regroupe des œuvres répondant à la même fonction avec des solutions plastiques fort différentes. Ainsi, au Gabon, les figures de reliquaire dites kota (fi'g. 1), sango (fig. 2), tsogo et fang, dont quelques-unes d'entre elles rarement préservées dans leur intégrité - sont encore fixées au réceptacle, panier en vannerie ou boîte en écorce,se rattache au culte des ancêtres. C'est l'un des principaux fondements des pratiques religieuses très fortes dans ces sociétés. Des peuples voisins, au Congo, les Mbédé ou Ambété (fig. 3) possèdent également des sculptures liées aux pratiques funéraires de conservation des reliques. Mais ce sont les corps mêmes des statues qui font office de réceptacles.

Plus loin vers l'Est, au sein du groupe kuba (république démocratique du Congo), il était d'usage autrefois d'ensevelir les morts, rois, chefs et notables, dans des tissus fabriqués selon la technique du velours. Peu à peu ces linceuls ont inspiré des tissus décoratifs qui ont séduit des collectionneurs célèbres, tels que Stephen Chauvet et Tristan Tzara. Chez les Bangwa du Cameroun, ce sont les statues commémoratives qui rappellent aux vivants les honneurs qui doivent être rendus aux souverains défunts.
