CATALOGUE DE VENTE à l'Hôtel de vente de SENS
AFRIQUE, AMERIQUE, OCEANIE ET DIVERS
expert: SERGE REYNES
23/10/2004
sold in 2007 on Ebay 11 Euro
Among the Oceanic works offered in the sale is a superb New Guinea flute-stopper male figure from a European Private Collection has crescent-shaped eyes, a pierced nose and a crown of cassowary feathers, pictured right (est. $280/350,000). Carved without the use of metal tools, this magnificent figure was used for ceremonial purposes and mounted on a bamboo flute in Lower Sepik River, Yuat River, Biwat.
The Pre-Columbian section will feature approximately thirty works from
The Charles Pankow Collection, which comprises a distinguished group of Maya
ceramic objects with notable examples of both polychrome and carved vessels
and a concentration of Jaina figures. Made for both the ruling class and
popular use, the Maya material provides a close look at characters in the
iconography of the Maya myth, the Popul Vuh, and sheds light on the ideals
of Maya society. From this collection is a Mayan standing dignitary Jaina,
Late Classic, ca. A.D. 550-950, pictured left, a figure with a simple
loincloth, jade ornaments and headband holding back a fringed coiffure (est.
$15/20,000). Also from the Pre-Columbian offering is a fine Mayan codex
vessel, Late Classic, ca. A.D. 550-950, well-published and widely recognized
and for its importance within the repertoire of codex vessels, pictured
below (est. $100/150,000). Among the most elegantly painted vase of the
school typified by the Princeton vase, the iconography eloquently
illustrates one of the most important figures of the Maya pantheon, the aged
deity Pawatuun, a principal god of the scribes, instructing young lords.
Another feature of this section is a large Maya lidded blackware vessel,
Early Classic, ca. A.D. 250-450, majestic in proportion with a high-domed
lid and rattle tetrapod legs (est. $100/150,000). The vessel is
finely-incised with two panels on the exterior and vividly depicts
iconography of the Underworld of Maya mythology, a zoomorphic creature with
a scrolled pupil on the watery surface of the Underworld.

Hector Acebes, Isolde Brielmaier, Ed Marquand
Portraits in Africa: 1948–1953
Seattle: Marquand Books. Washington University Press
2004
144 pp.
Hardcover
chiefly ill. Includes bibliographical references.
ISBN: 0295984139
Abstract:
"The author, who is the director of the Hector Acebes Archive, penned the
biography for this publication. It features over ninety striking images in
monographic form. Distributed by the University of Washington Press, the
book features a discussion by Isolde Brielmaier comparing Acebes' work to
that of other photographers."
"A monograph of Hector Acebes best photographic work in Africa. Taken in
Mali, Guinea, Kenya, Cameroon and Central Africa these ninety images
includes striking portraits and landscapes. Includes a brief biography of
Acebes and an essay placing his work in the context of other photographers
working during the same time period."
"Photographing with the box camera his father had given him, Hector Acebes
noticed as a teenager in the 1930s that his pictures of friends and family
were consistently sharper and more carefully composed than those taken by
his schoolmates. This innate talent, combined with solid training in
engineering and an attraction to adventure, eventually grew into a long and
productive career as a documentary and industrial filmmaker. It is Acebes's
still photographs from his travels in the late 1940s and early 1950s
throughout Africa and South American, however, that may become his most
important legacy. With the respect they command for the individuals who
appeared before his lens., these recently rediscovered images attest to
Acebes's photographic gift. They offer a valuable resource for scholars and
students of local societies and cultures in Africa and South America, yet
their importance reverberates far beyond the classroom. Today, Acebes's
images are recognized as fine art--works of beauty and grace that showcase
the photographer's technical ability and masterful compositional skills.
Even more evident are the confidence and respect he established with his
subjects--qualities that shine through to elevate his work beyond the
documentary. Acebes's portraits offer our jaded imaginations a fresh look at
people, cultures, and experiences that have changed dramatically over the
past fifty years. We see individuals, families, and communities set among
monumental architecture, busy markets, and broad landscapes, all viewed from
the passionate perspective of a young man, curious and captivated by the
vigorous energy and beauty of what he saw.
This book presents the exquisite work of Hector Acebes for the first time in
monograph form. Over ninety striking images are richly reproduced in
duotone.
Ed Marquand, director of the Hector Acebes Archive, introduces Acebes in a
brief biography.
Isolde Brielmaier, a noted art historian of African photography, places
Acebes's African work in the context of other photographers shooting in
Africa at the time. She also discusses the qualities of Acebes's work that
distinguish his photographs today."
"The collaborative effort of Isolde Brielmaier (Visiting Professor of Art at
Vassar College) and Ed Marquand (Director of the Hector Acebes Archive),
Hector Acebes: Portraits In Africa, 1948-1953 showcases the photography of
Acebes taken in Africa in 1948, 1949, and 1953. These black and white
photographic images have justifiably been acclaimed as some of the most
beautiful photographs of Africans ever taken. The images, however, were
hidden away in Acebes' photography studio in Bogota, Columbia, and it was
not until 2003 (when Acebes was 82 years old) that he had his first art
gallery exhibition. With the publication of Hector Acebes: Portraits In
Africa, 1948-1953, (which is enthusiastically recommended for personal,
academic, and community library Photography Studies collections) full
justice has now been accomplished with respect to bringing a lasting access
to Acebes's photographic artistry to the general public."
"A passion for adventure and a talent for photography led Hector Acebes to
Africa where he created a stunning body of work in still photography and
documentary films. His loving portraits of individuals, families, and whole
communities illustrate daily life in Africa from the late 1940s to the early
’50s. Ed Marquand is the director of the Hector Acebes Archive and he
introduces you to this amazing artist while Isolde Brielmaier, an historian
of African photography, puts Acebes’ images in the proper context. Together,
they bring the book to life as you share Acebes grand adventure."

attestent l'immense talent d'Acebes.
Hector Acebes a

Book Description:
Idealized pairings have been an enduring concern of sculptors across the
African continent. This universal theme of duality is now examined in a
handsome book that presents African sculptural masterpieces created in wood,
bronze, terracotta, and beadwork from the twelfth to the twentieth
centuries. Drawn from twenty-four sub-Saharan African cultures, including
those of the Dogon, Lobi, Baule, Senufo, Yoruba, Chamba, Jukun, Songye, and
Sakalava, the sculptures tell much about each culture's beliefs and social
ideals. These artistic creations are astonishingly rich and diverse forms of
expression.
Idealized pairings have been an enduring concern of sculptors in many
sub-Saharan African cultures. This exhibition examines the theme through
approximately 60 works of sculpture in wood, bronze, terracotta, and beadwork,
dating from the 12th to the 20th century. The examples are drawn from some 30
distinct African traditions, including those of the Dogon, Lobi, Baule, Senufo,
Yoruba, Chamba, Jukun, Chokwe, Hemba, Songye, Luba, Mangbetu, and Sakalava. The
astonishingly rich and diverse forms of expression considered have been selected
for their aesthetic attributes as well as their specific cultural significance.
The earliest works displayed are an array of seated male and female couples in
terracotta and bronze from the ancient urban center of Djenne-Jeno in
present-day Mali. These sculptures, likely dating from the 12th century, were
created to be placed on altars and carried as personal amulets. In later works
from the region, created between the 16th and 20th centuries by Dogon sculptors,
imagery of couples relates at once to Creation, productivity, and the
fundamental interdependence and complementarity of man and woman. The elemental
abstract graphic motif is a pervasive element of the iconography of Dogon
artifacts, ranging from freestanding sculpture created for ancestral altars to
carved granary doors and locks. Pair or Janus representations, as seen in many
of the traditions that are featured, reflect the object’s role in bridging human
and ancestral realms in order to elicit divine insights into the human
condition. Across central Africa, paired figures are an integral aspect of the
insignia of leaders that comments upon the divinely ordained nature of kingship.
An essay written by Alisa LaGamma discusses thirty works, all of which are
illustrated in color.
This book is the catalogue for an exhibition on view
at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (February 10 to September 5, 2004).
A collection of African sculptures depicting couples, exhibited at the
Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
The text explains the context of the art works and the place of the couple
in African world views.
Illustrated in colour.

che in uno sfodo altrettanto nero fanno apparire agli occhi, all'inizio

Publisher's summary :
A tribal people located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Songye are best
known for their distinctive statuaries and masks, which for centuries have been
used to protect villages, ward off enemies, and bring fertility and wealth.
Approximately one thousand of these pieces are shown in this vibrant collection.
The Songye often named their statues and decorated them with horns, skins,
beads, tacks, shells, and bits of cloth. As a result, each item displays a
singular, impressive identity. Considered to be imbued with magical energy and
used only by village shamans, these statues have enormous cultural and
historical significance, and they are also powerful works of art in their own
right.
Songye statues are fascinating in form and exude an impressive beauty. For
power, intensity and inspiration they have no equal in Central Africa.
This volume illustrates around a thousand examples, which have been the subject
of a highly detailed morphological, stylistic and historical study. There is a
close relationship between the two major known traditions - those of the western
regions, from the Belande to the Eki, and the stylistic centres of the Kalebwe
and the Songye in the east. The creation of a Songye statue requires the
intervention of three persons: the smith, the sculptor and the nganga or
witch-doctor. Their collaboration transforms the statues into active powers:
efficacious and redoubtable. In them we discover an unsuspected dimension that
harks back to the very origins of the Central African peoples. Human beings, as
they measured themselves against the forces of the universe, developed a new
political and social culture through an esoteric form of acquired knowledge. The
Songye statues, silent witnesses of this transition, have finally won their
place in the history of art.

meaning and cultural origin.
This comprehensive survey of 230 styles is an essential reference.
Book Review:
"African art with its powerful forms, complex symbolism, and formal
inventiveness has only recently come to be recognized as one of the great
artistic traditions of mankind. This rich tradition is showcased here in a
remarkable selection of outstanding works. Nearly 1,600 objects are
illustrated, each accompanied by scholarly information on style, usage,
meaning, and cultural origin. Featured individually by section are the
styles of Western Sudan, the West African Coastal Region, West Central
Africa, Central Africa, and Eastern and Southern Africa.
A thought provoking introduction helps readers understand the significance
of African art as a form of human creative expression, its relationships to
contemporary Western art, and the controversies surrounding it in the
world's museums. Newcomers to the field as well as professionals will find
many questions answered in the text and captions. This comprehensive survey
of some 230 styles of African art is an essential reference for scholars,
teachers, students, curators, collectors, and dealers."

voyage.
