Das 213 Lose umfassende Angebot „Afrikanische Kunst“ umfasst ein bemerkenswert vielfältiges und qualitätvolles Angebot von Kunstwerken unterschiedlicher Ethnien aus Mali, Burkina Faso, Elfenbeinküste, Kamerun, Nigeria, Benin, Gabun, Kongo und dem Osten Zentralafrikas.

Besonders hervorzuheben sind die Arbeiten aus Gabun, darunter Masken, Reliquiarfiguren und eine Speichertür der Tsogho. Die Reliquiarfiguren werden mit € 18.000 bis € 35.000 aufgerufen. Ein Reliquiarkopf liegt bei € 12.000. Reich vertreten sind figürliche Darstellungen der Dogon wie beispielsweise eine Reiterfigur zum Schätzpreis von € 12.000, eine der sehr seltenen Figuren der Kipsi (Schätzpreis € 2.500) und der Tellem, die zu einem Schätzpreis von € 12.000 aufgerufen wird.

Aus Burkina Faso bestechen eine Vorsatzmaske der Tusya mit dem Aufsatz eines Hornrabenkopfes, die mit taxierten € 2.600 aufgerufen wird sowie ein sehr besonderer, fein gearbeiteter Antilopen - Tanzaufsatz der Bamana, der auf € 1.600 geschätzt ist. Ein Highlight der Offerte ist ein Vogelkopfaufsatz der Baga, (€ 7.800). Hervorzuheben ist auch ein Ibedjipaar in Kauri-Mänteln, (€ 1.800). Aus der Region des Crossfluss stammt ein Tanzaufsatz mit vier vollplastisch ausgearbeiteten, menschlichen, hautbezogenen Gesichtern (Schätzpreis € 1.500).

Bei der Kunst des Kongo kommen Kunstwerke der Luba von feinster Qualität zum Aufruf, darunter eine Ahnenfigur mit Kaskadenfrisur von ca. 50 cm Höhe (Schätzpreis € 16.000), ein Palmweinbecher der Kuba mit menschlicher Figur als Henkel, eine surrealistische, janusköpfige Figur der Lega, (€ 1.600), ein Nagelfetisch der Vili, (€ 20.000) sowie außergewöhnliche Fetischfiguren der Songye, die zwischen Euro 700 und 3.400 aufgerufen werden.

Neben den Holzplastiken sind erwähnenswert ein Kultgefäß aus Ton der Mangbetu, die Darstellung einer lebensgroßen Maus mit einer winzigen menschlichen Figur der Fon aus Bronze und eine große Sammlung von Glasperlenketten aus Venedig, Chevrons und Millefiori.

Darüberhinaus kommen 29 Objekte aus Ozeanien, Altamerika und Asien zum Aufruf.

Some 500 art objects will be offered in the auction catalogue of the 53rd tribal art auction. Among them a large selection from the cultural area Oceania (about 60 items) with its focus Indonesia, South Pacific and Papua New Guinea. Right at the start of the auction there is a pair of rice deities "bulul" of Ifuago, Philippines (Lot 2), which belonged to the prestigious Paris collection Alain Schoffel by the ?70s (limit ? 14,000).

Among Old America there is an outstanding anthropomorphic Jadeite-Figurine of the Olmecs from Mexico (Lot 98). It is listed on the back by an old number "321-4" (limit ? 10,000).

Once auctioned at Sotheby Parke Benet in 1972, among lot 184 an Antelope dance crest 'tjiwara' of the Bamana, Mali, is going to come into the market again (limit ? 18,000). The religious and social life of the Bamana people was determined by six initiation communities. Each level of initiation was represented by a special mask type. The 'tijwara' headdress belongs to the fifth level. Its members had to encourage a good harvest by celebrating their masquerades.The masks used to appear in pairs male-female, symbolizing the sun and the earth and their meaning for human life.

Among the Dan there can be seen a deangle mask (Lot 240). Its complete form belongs undoubtedly to the classics of African art, that has been collected by the '20s, particularly in France (limit ? 33,000). Provenance: Jean-Paul Delcourt, french trader and collector, who lived in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, since the late ?40s.

Two expressive sculptures will spark attention to ambitious collectors of classic modernism as well: a facial mask of the Fang, Gabon, (Lot 360) of the type of 'ekeke'. In Gabon, due to the destruction of the reach cult, objects and masks have endured only in few number. The mask was used in the New York collection Joseph and Doris Gerofsky whose provenance is secured in two other auction items (limit: ? 35,000).

The second expressive sculpture is published as caryatid stool of the Holoholo (Lot 397), a small ethnic group in the middle Lake Tanganyika, of which only very few sculptures are secured. Attributed is the 'master of slit eyes', whose most famous objects are stored in museums (limit 40,000 ?). Its origin lies in the late 19th Century and came in the collection of the colonial governor Secretary Max Wentzel in Tabora (Tanzania) after German expedition Rwanda 1893/94. Since 1909, it is owned by the German family and will now attain the art market for the first time.

Lot 422 is a little ivory amulet figure of Luba, Zaire, with provenance Marc Felix, Brussels (important journalist and expert on African art and collectors and dealers). Ivory amulets of Luba have portrait-like character. Devotees anointed the figures with oil in homage to the ancestors. Such treatments, together with regular handling and contact with the human body, gave the figures a smooth, lustrous surface and a rich caramel color ranging from yellowish-brown to auburn (limit ? 13,000)

Dar a conocer algunas de las monedas tradicionales africanas y reivindicar su valor en la historia del dinero y de los sistemas monetarios, son los objetivos fundamentales de esta exposición organizada por la Fundación Banco Santander y la Fundación Alberto Jiménez-Arellano. Pero también nos servirá para comprender algo mejor a los pueblos que las emplearon; las propias monedas son un reflejo de la sociedad, de las creencias, de la cultura, de la economía, e incluso del desarrollo tecnológico de cada uno de ellos.

La moneda africana tradicional, como bien se aprecia en las más de doscientas piezas de esta colección, no responde a formas occidentales y por ello causa gran sorpresa; sin embargo, se trata realmente de objetos que han funcionado con los mismos fines que una moneda en cualquier parte del mundo. El interés estético y el refinamiento de sus formas convirtieron a estas monedas en objetos bellos y deseables que con el tiempo fueron perdiendo el uso inicial para el que fueron creadas

The works presented, which have been selected from private collections, constitute one of the most important groupings of such material in Spain.

Con esta muestra se pretende dar a conocer las monedas tradicionales africanas, reivindicar su lugar en la historia del dinero y de los sistemas monetarios y, a través de ellas, comprender mejor a los pueblos que las emplearon. Las monedas son un reflejo de la sociedad, las creencias, la cultura, la economía, e incluso del desarrollo tecnológico de cada uno de ellos.
Tradicionalmente los pueblos africanos emplearon como dinero sal, cacao, conchas, así como tejidos, armas, herramientas, joyas..., productos naturales o manufacturas a los que se les reconocía un valor por el propio material, pero también por su utilidad y por el simbolismo o significado que tenían dentro de cada sociedad. A ello se sumará con el tiempo un interés estético, lo que los convierte además en objetos bellos y deseables que poco a poco adquirían más valor de intercambio y perdían a su vez el uso inicial para el que fueron creados. Refinando sus formas, se aumentaba su valor.

La exposición se articula en grandes áreas que responden a la forma de cada moneda. Una forma que viene determinada por el objeto del que proceden, un arma, un apero de labranza, un instrumento musical, o una joya. Se pretende ofrecer una amplia visión de las monedas africanas tradicionales atendiendo a su forma, realzando la calidad estética de estas piezas, en muchos casos auténticas esculturas, y llamar la atención sobre su importancia en las tradiciones y economía africanas.

Organiza la Fundación Banco Santander en colaboración con la Fundación Alberto Jiménez-Arellano Alonso.

A lo largo de la historia hombres y mujeres han utilizado objetos, y no monedas como las conocemos hoy, para realizar pagos, intercambios, donativos u ofrendas.

El trueque es considerado el primer peldaño en la evolución los sistemas monetarios. A medida que las sociedades primitivas evolucionan las transacciones se hacen más complejas, transformándose algunas de las mercancías intercambiables en unidad monetaria y en valor de referencia social. En general estas formas de dinero de son denominadas “paleo-monedas”.

Las paleo-monedas poseían una fuerte carga simbólica para cada pueblo por ser signos de prestigio social del poseedor. En África estaban vinculadas a prácticas ceremoniales específicas y su uso, limitado a las clases dirigentes.

Los pueblos africanos conocen la moneda europea desde el siglo XVI. La atesoran por el valor del metal y por su belleza, y aunque comienzan a admitirla para algunos pagos, se mantiene el dinero tradicional hasta las primeras décadas del s. XX.

Tras lograr la independencia, los países africanos acuñaron sus propias monedas, grabando en ellas la imagen de algunos de los objetos que habían usado tradicionalmente como dinero: la manilla en Biafra, el caurí en Ghana o la cruz de Katanga en la República Democrática del Congo.

Seit 2003 veranstaltet Lempertz in seiner Brüsseler Filiale nach kurzer Unterbrechung erneut Auktionen aus dem Bereich Tribal Art. Brüssel ist neben Paris der maßgebliche Marktplatz für Stammeskunst in Europa. In der diesjährigen Auktion mit alter Kunst aus Afrika und Ozeanien kommen etwa 243 Lose zum Aufruf. Neben einer kleinen Sammlung mit Skulpturen des Vodoon-Kultes aus Togo und Ghana–gesammelt von einem deutschen Bildhauer–stehen weitere hochwertige Einzelstücke aus alten Privatsammlungen im Angebot.

Spitzenlos der Auktion ist ein rarer Gedenkkopf aus Bronze für einen König aus dem alten afrikanischen Königreich Benin (40/60.000). Der 50 cm große Bronzekopf ist das sorgfältig gearbeitete Portrait von Oba Osemwenede (1816–1848) und zeigt den König in seinem prunkvollen, mit Korallenperlen geschmückten Ornat. Beispiele der ästhetisch anspruchs-vollen und aus einer jahrhundertealten Tradition schöpfenden Kunst sind im Zuge einer britischen „Strafexpedition“ erstmals 1897 in Europa bekannt geworden, wo sie aufgrund ihrer hohen Qualität für Aufsehen und Interesse sorgten. Unser Beispiel stammt aus dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert und wurde durch den Kunsthändler William Webster in die bedeutende Sammlung Geheimrat Professor Hans Meyer, Leipzig vermittelt, von wo aus sie anschließend in die Sammlung des Kunstsammlers Albert Wagenmann, Mannheim gelangte. Es ist äußerst selten, dass Kunstwerke aus Benin mit solch lückenloser Provenienz auf dem Markt auftauchen.

Ein weiteres Highlight der Auktion ist ein Kota–Reliquiar aus dem Gabun, das bereits vor 1913 in eine französische Privatsammlung gelangte und wegen seines Janusgesichts einen seltenen Typ dieser abstrakten Wächterfiguren repräsentiert (40.000).

Die mit 25.000 bewertete Figur der Dogon, Burkina Faso, beeindruckt selbst noch als Fragment durch ihre hohe skulpturale Qualität. Eine mit derselben Taxe angebotene Maske der Chokwe aus Zaire stammt aus einer alten, erst kürzlich aufgelösten deutschen Privatsammlung.

Ein mit einem ganzflächigem Muster dekorativ geschnitztes und farbig bemaltes Kriegsschild aus Neu–Irland ist Spitzenobjekt aus dem kleinen Angebot mit Kunst aus Ozeanien und rundet das Angebot der Auktion ab (8.000).

Collectors of outstanding African and Oceanic art are awaiting fine art auctioneer Bonhams' upcoming sale on May 15th, 2008 in New York City following the success of the newly formed department's inaugural sale in the Fall of 2007. The upcoming auction is expected to entice aficionados of the genre.
The sale include selected pieces from the Bohlen Collection of African Art, one of the premier private collections in the United States. One of the highlights of the Bohlen material is a rare Punu figure estimated at $100,000 to $150,000. Collected prior to 1935, the work has been within the collections of several luminaries in the field such as Jernander, de Grunne, and Guimiot. Also to be offered is a superb Lumbo mask, estimated at $60,000 to $80,000. Formerly owned by the noted Emile Deletaille, it was collected prior to WWII and is considered exceptionally beautiful. Sure to fetch significant bids is a superb Bamana Kore mask. Previously sold by both Entwistle and Monbrison, the mask, which Rodolitz describes as: "Perhaps the finest Bamana Kore mask to come to market," is estimated at $50,000 to $60,000. Other African art objects from various owners are also on offer in May, including spectacular ivories from the Luba and Lega peoples of the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as stools, masks and figures with notable provenance and exhibition histories. This auction is also particularly strong in the area of Polynesian art, including numerous pieces of superb type and with excellent provenance. These include: a rare Easter Island piece from the famed Tomkins Collection; a pristine Austral Islands paddle collected prior to 1822 from a Captain John Walter Roberts which features an unusual band of dancing figures; a pre-contact wooden Hawaiian spear that in the past belonged to Elijah Armitage of the historical London Missionary Society; a Marquesan stilt-step and a splendid U'u.

A MAGNIFICENT AND HIGHLY IMPORTANT BAGA SERPENT FROM THE DINHOFER COLLECTION ACHIEVES $3,289,000

New York, New York, May 16, 2008 – The spring sale of African, Oceanic & Pre-Columbian Art, featuring several distinguished private collections, achieved a total of $10,165,325 (est. $4.7/6.7 million*). Today’s sales room was full, with active bidding from clients both in the room and on the telephone.

Heinrich Schweizer, Department Head of African and Oceanic Art in New York, said, “We are extremely pleased with today’s total of over $10 million, repeated for the second consecutive year for our various-owners sale of African, Oceanic and Pre-Columbian Art in New York. The results of today’s auction showed many works achieving prices that are many multiple times their high estimates.” Jean Fritts, Worldwide Director of African and Oceanic Art said, “Following the record results for this category in New York in May of 2007, today’s sale shows that New York is an exceptional marketplace in which traditional buyers of African and Oceanic Art compete with collectors of other categories of art. In today’s sale, we saw significant crossover interest from collectors of Impressionist and Modern and Contemporary Art who entering thefield at the very highest levels of quality, seeking to collect great masterpieces.”

The outstanding highlight of today’s sale was A Magnificent and Highly Important Baga Serpent, an impressive sculptural object from The Republic of Guinea from The Dinhofer Collection. Bidding for the Baga Serpent continued for several minutes, with competition from multiple clients before selling to applause for $3,289,000 (lot 58, est. $1.5/2 million), setting a record for a Baga sculpture at auction. This monumental clan insignia was collected in 1957, just prior to the country’s independence, by art dealers Henri and Hélène Kamer. By 1961, the serpent was sold by the Kamers to the gallery of one of the most important dealers of 20th century art: Pierre Matisse, the son of Henri Matisse. In Matisse’s gallery on East 57th Street in New York, the Baga Serpent was exhibited alongside works by Joan Miró and various group shows of contemporary artists including Wilfredo Lam, Jean Dubuffet and Alberto Giacometti. Specifically, the exhibition of the Baga Serpent in Matisse’s gallery may have had an influence on the creation of Alexander Calder’s Short Lipped Snake from 1973. An additional highlight from The Dinhofer Collection was a Superb Teke Male Power Figure, Democratic Republic of the Congo, which sold to a bidder in the room for $301,000 (lot 57, est. $100/150,000), setting a record for a Teke sculpture at auction. The Dinhofer Collection, which consisted of lots 44 -75, totalled $3,950,000.

From The Walter and Molly Bareiss Collection of African Art, A Superb and Important Songye Community Power Figure, collected in situ by Gaston Heenen, Governor of Katanga, before 1937, brought bids from at least four interested clients in the room and on the phone, selling for $451,000 (lot 170, est. $250/350,000). Walter and Molly Bareiss, who passed away in 2007 and 2006, respectively, viewed African Art as an aesthetic of the highest accomplishment and complexity. They concentrated their collection on pieces from Central Africa and Southeastern Africa, an area largely ignored by other collectors and museums at the time that they purchased the works. Recognition in the marketplace for works of great quality and age from East Africa was demonstrated by A Tanzanian, Possibly Kerewe, Female Figure, Tanzania, which sold for many times above its high estimate for $205,000 (lot 184, est. $15/25,000), setting a record for an East African sculpture at auction. Another highlight from this region was A Kamba Male Power Figure, Kenya, which brought $61,000 (lot 187, est. $7/10,000). Works from The Walter and Molly Bareiss Collection of African Art (lots 157-187) brought a total of $1,629,875.

From a Private Collection, a Punu Mask, Gabon fetched a price of $337,000 (lot 139, est. $60/90,000). This lost treasure was published in 1915 in a seminal book entitled Negerplastik by Carl Einstein, which had great influence on artists of the 20th century who bought the book and studied its objects. Also from a Private Collection, A Superb Luba Hermaphrodite Figure, Democratic Republic of the Congo, a masterful example of Luba artistry, was highly sought after, bringing $511,000 (lot 142, est. $80/120,000).A Rare Dogon Cliff Painting, Mali from An American Private Collection more than doubled its high estimate, bringing $91,000 (lot 81, est. $25/35,000). Also from an American Private Collection, A Fine Sherbo Female Figure, Sierra Leone fetched $46,000 (lot 95, est. $15/25,000). From A British Private Collection, A Toma Mask, Liberia, lot 97, exceeded its estimate of $30/50,000 to sell for $67,000.

Works from Nigeria were highly sought after and brought great prices. Two lots which came from A German Private Collection demonstrated the American market’s appreciation for works with strength in their sculptural quality: A Superb Ijo Fish Headcrest, Nigeria, realized $79,000 (lot 104, est. $40/60,000); and A Magnificent Ishtan Mask, Nigeria sold for $103,000 (lot 105, est. $30/50,000). Smaller objects with great attention to fine quality were present in The Bohlen Collection and achieved strong prices. A highlight was A Magnificent Vili Kneeling Figure, Democratic Republic of Congo, lot 134, which surpassed its estimate of $30/50,000 many times to realize a price of $289,000. Also from The Bohlen Collection, An Important Bembe Male Ancestor Figure, Democratic Republic of the Congo sold for $109,000 (lot 123, est. $50/70,000).

From the Oceanic offerings, A Fine Nias Male Ancestor Figure, Republic of Indonesia, lot 32, more than doubled its estimate of $40/60,000 to achieve a price of $157,000. A Marshall Islands Pounder, made from the shell of a Tridacna Gigas (giant clam), brought $73,000 (lot 42, est. $20/30,000). Only a very small number of these pounders, whose delicate shapes mirror the curves of Constantin Brancusi’s Bird in Space, are known to exist. Another highlight from the Oceanic section was A Hawaiian Bowl, Hawaii, featuring a fine lustrous dark brown patina, which sold for $85,000 (lot 36, est. $7/10,000).

The selection of 30 Pre-Columbian objects was highlighted by a Large Olmec Jade Mask, Middle Preclassic, ca. 900-300 BC, which sold for $481,000 (lot 14, est. $400/600,000), setting a record for an Olmec mask at auction. From The Dinhofer Collection, a Tiwanaku Wood Beaker, ca. AD 500-1000 fetched $43,000 (lot 9, est. $35/45,000), purchased for an American museum.

Iron began to proliferate in Sub-Saharan Africa in the 17th century and quickly evolved into a desirable trade commodity.
The diverse physical forms of iron currency were developed from traditional objects already in use, such as weapons, tools, bracelets, and anklets.
The gallery has carefully chosen the objects on display for their inherent genius, craftsmanship, and beauty.

LUGANO.- From 28 May to 23 August, the Galleria Gottardo in Lugano will be holding the world's first exhibition of the ethnic artworks collected by one of the twentieth century's greatest art patrons: Peggy Guggenheim. The idea behind the exhibition is to display the "exotic objects" that embellished the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni during the collector's lifetime. Since her death, they have been carefully restored and examined by scientific researchers. The restoration project was jointly launched by Galleria Gottardo, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice and the Museum of Cultures in Lugano with the aim of rediscovering the specific meaning of each object in itself and in the context in which it was purchased.

Peggy Guggenheim's passion for ethnic art dated back to the period of her tempestuous relationship with Max Ernst, who was a keen collector of this kind of art. When their relationship broke down in 1943, the artist left with all the works in his collection. After settling permanently in Venice and opening her collection to the general public, Peggy rekindled her interest in ethnic art, and, from 1959, she began to acquire works and exhibit them in her home, mixing them with contemporary artworks as she felt inclined. She developed a genuine passion, an involuntary, unconscious attraction for these objects, which was rooted in purely phenomenal interest: she never felt a great need to find out more about their meaning and value. She appreciated their decorative nature, using them as a means of enhancing her interior design and keeping up with the latest fashions.

Based on photographs from the period and the scarce information available on the subject, it is thought that her private collection consisted of around 50 artworks, mainly from Africa and Oceania; 35 of these remained in the estate of Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, where they have been conserved in the museum’s art storage.

The exotic artefacts had always been considered valuable as part of Peggy's collection, but with uncertainty about the intrinsic value of the items in question when examined outside the classical canons of conventionally understood art in the West.

One of the aims of the “Ethnopassion” exhibition is to transform this view, giving these objects not just the value that they have in the intellectual context that fanned Peggy Guggenheim's interest for ethnic art, but also an anthropological value arising from the study of the objects and their links with various periods and cultures.

The mandate for the scientific analysis of the collection was given to the Museum of Cultures of the City of Lugano, under the direction of Francesco Paolo Campione. Thanks to him and his staff, in-depth analysis, including the accurate restoration of the objects, the creation of frames and supports, philological research and scientific classification of the works, visitors to the Galleria Gottardo can admire these artworks in their new found splendour and let their imaginations wander in the magical atmosphere that reigned in Peggy Guggenheim's palace on the banks of Venice’s Canal Grande, where art, style, passion and creativity met.

Selected works from the internationally famous collection of Walter Bareiss (1919 Tübingen – 2007 Greenwich/Connecticut) are to be shown by the Munich art auction house NEUMEISTER in the Conzen Rahmenmuseum (Conzen Frame Museum) which is famous for its frames dating from the Gothic to the 19th century. On exhibition will be a preview of the special auction on 13 November at the Munich headquarters of the art auction house; this preview will also be shown at the Galerie NEUMEISTER, Gabelsbergerstraße 39, 80799 Munich, from 22 October to 11 November.

A total of 110 items will be shown, including a selection of 87 reproduced in the exhibition catalogue KILENGI: Afrikanische Kunst aus der Sammlung Bareiss, which was published in 1997 by the Kestner Gesellschaft in Hanover on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name, and also other important items such as a crucifix from the Congo, Zaire, 18th/19th century, which was exhibited in the exhibition "Africa: The Art of a Continent" at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and at the Guggenheim Museum New York.

Bareiss' outstanding collection of African art became internationally famous thanks to an exhibition tour through Europe and the USA. The stops on that 1997-2000 tour were: Hanover (Kestner Gesellschaft, organizer of the tour), Vienna (Museum für Angewandte Kunst), Munich (Kunstbau Lenbachhaus), Iowa City (University of Iowa Museum of Art) and Purchase, N.Y. (Neuberger Museum of Art). The catalogue for that exhibition was published in German under the title KILENGI. Afrikanische Kunst aus der Sammlung Bareiss. Christopher D. Roy, Professor of Art History at the University of Iowa and also curator of the African, Oceanic, and New-World Cultures section, was the author of that scholarly publication, which included an annotated register of the exhibits.

Bareiss' first compelling encounter with African art came about in 1948, when he bought several items at an auction in Europe for the Museum of Modern Art in New York, whose provisional director he was for a time. However, the US collector only really began to collect African art himself at the age of 60 – perhaps as a consequence of a professional life as a collector devoted to the art of different regions and epochs, such as Attic vases, Japanese woodblock prints, Chinese ceramics, fine art of Classical Modernism, modernist artists' book, and contemporary art. The art connoisseur immersed himself in studies of myths and tales, religions and their cults, the handling of natural forces and ancestor worship. At the age of almost 80 Bareiss, commented as follows in the exhibition catalogue KILENGI: "African art is present in all phases of African life. It had a much greater influence of people than the philosophies and religions of western, near-eastern and far-eastern cultures. African art means much more than I would ever have believed: based on the worship of, and trust in ancestors, it involves the promotion of fertility, the birth of new life and the continuation of families, the initiation and training of people, their illnesses and their healing, as well as death, all expressions of social, political and magical-religious relations, and all influences that determine the lives of Africans."

The Munich gallery owners Fred and Jens Jahn supported Walter Bareiss in building up this important collection through close collaboration over a period of more than 20 years, together with the Belgian expert on African Art, Marc L. Felix. They are also co-responsible for the current catalogue edited by the Africa Expert at NEUMEISTER, Dr. Karl-Ferdinand Schädler. The two Munich gallery owners brought the attention of the collector to areas in African art which had been as good as hermetically sealed until then. Thus the focal points are no longer the classical West Africa – although the collection contains some important items from there – but rather the East and South-East of the continent: southern and eastern Congo, the former Zaire, including the tropical forest area called after the river Ituri; and East and South Africa, namely, Angola and areas only recently discovered for the art market, such as, Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia, from which a large number of astonishing masks, and magic and ancestral figures have made their way to Europe. In the book KILENGI Christopher D. Roy summarizes: "Walter Bareiss has put together a collection which demonstrates how inadequate a definition of African art can be that is based on the text-book examples."

The Rosenthal Primordial Couple Realizes $4 Million, a Record for a Senufo Sculpture at Auction·New York, New York, November 14, 2008 – Today at Sotheby’s New York, in a packed sales room with spirited bidding from clients both in the room and participating over the phone, the auction of African and Oceanic Art from the Collection of Frieda and Milton Rosenthal surpassed pre-sale estimates, bringing $10,859,944 (est. $6,849,500/ 10,808,000*). This offering represents the most important collection of African and Oceanic Art to be offered in forty years in New York and is the highest total for a single-owner sale of African and Oceanic Art in New York. Three works sold for over $1 million today: the Senufo Primordial Couple, bringing $4 million; An East Sepik River, Sawos, Ancestral Malu board, which achieved $1,314,500; and a Kota reliquary guardian figure, which realized $1,058,500. The sale was 86.7% sold by lot with 70% of the sold lots achieving hammer prices at or above their estimates. The collection is one of the last great historic American Collections in the field.

The strong participation witnessed today demonstrates, even amid challenging economic times, the continued enthusiasm of collectors who are dedicated to acquiring rare works of exceptional quality and provenance. It is interesting to note that 50% of the buyers of the top ten works were American, and 50% were European, underlying the global reach of this market.” Heinrich Schweizer, Head of the African and Oceanic Department in New York, said, “Today’s results are exceptional given the current economic climate. The fierce competition across the sale indicates that important works in this category are still undervalued. This is further demonstrated by the many world records achieved today, which include the Senufo Primordial Couple, the Sawos, Ancestral Malu board, the Kota reliquary guardian figure, and the Easter Island Male Figure, all of which achieved records in their category. The Rosenthal Primordial Couple achieved an outstanding price of $4 million, within its estimate of $3/5 million, the highest estimate ever placed on a work of African art at auction.”

The centerpiece of auction was Lot 63, a Magnificent and Highly Important Senufo Pair of Male and Female Ancestor Figures, Ivory Coast, also known as the Rosenthal Primordial Couple. The male and female ancestor figures were sought after by at least three bidders, two of which were in the room, before selling for $4,002,500 (est. $3/5 million) to a client on the phone. This is a world record for a Senufo sculpture at auction. The sculptures are unique to African history because they have survived intact as an original pair commissioned to celebrate the founding ancestors of a Senufo community. These iconic works were formerly in the collection of Vice President Nelson A. Rockefeller, a powerful promoter of African Art in the United States and have been exhibited and published extensively over the past forty-five years. Nelson Rockefeller had purchased the Primordial Couple at the Klejman Gallery in 1961, and the Rosenthals acquired them at Sotheby’s Parke-Bernet in May of 1967 at an auction to raise money for The Museum of Primitive Art, a private initiative of Nelson Rockefeller, which was subsequently transferred to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where it forms the core of the Department for the Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas.

Sale brings the 2008 total for Art from Africa, Oceania & South-East Asia at Sotheby’s Paris to €12 million

Paris, 4 December – Over 1,000 visitors attended Sotheby’s six-day viewing of African, Oceanic & South-East Asian Art from five important collections at Galerie Ariane Dandois.

Keenest attention centred on a group of works presented in the catalogue under the title Paris-New York 1935. Although it was in Paris, at the start of the 20th century, that modern artists "discovered" Negro Art, it only achieved widespread public recognition after the African Negro Art show held at the youthful New York MoMA in March 1935 – one of the most important and audacious exhibitions of its time.

One of the most striking exhibits at the MoMA was a carved masterpiece from Gabon: a majestic Fang nlo-byeri ancestor head from the Charles Ratton and Louis Carré Collections, which sold at Sotheby's above high estimate for €768,750 (lot 132).

To coincide with the MoMA show, the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York staged an exhibition of African Sculptures from the Ratton Collection that included an important Fang figure from south-west Cameroon, which tripled high estimate at Sotheby's as it sold for €426,750 (lot 131).

With a price of €300,750, four times top estimate, a fine, rare Baule or Senufo figure from Ivory Coast (lot 86) paid handsome tribute to two of its previous owners – both towering figures who fought for the recognition of African art in the 1960s: Léopold Senghor in Senegal and André Malraux in France.

The Pierre Parat Collection of Mumuye Figures & Namji Dolls also aroused fierce bidding. Both ensembles were discovered at the end of the 1960s, and have stylized forms with incredible formal freedom. The most popular Mumuye work was a "Cubist-style" figure at €79,950 (lot 109), while an impressive Dowayo/Namji doll quadrupled top estimate on €23,550 (lot 112).

The sale's Oceanic highlight was an important mask from Pentecost Island, Vanuatu – unquestionably one of the finest known examples from the limited corpus of Pentecost Island masks – that sold for €198,750 (lot 42).

La collection Durand-Barrère : une collection discrète constituée dans les années 1950 en Afrique de l’Ouest à partir de Dakar, à l’initiative d’une jeune enseignante française fascinée par les Arts Nègres depuis l’exposition coloniale de 1931, cette collection est restée dans la famille des collectionneurs jusqu’à ce jour en Béarn.

Elle n’en est sortie, partiellement, qu’en deux occasions - en 1961 lors de l’exposition de Pau Sculptures de l’Afrique Noire organisée en grande partie par la famille Durand-Barrère et par Jacqueline Delange, chargée du Département d’Afrique Noire au Musée de l’Homme et en 1964 lors de l’exposition Senufo sculpture from West Africa organisée à New York par Robert Goldwater au Museum of Primitive Art, où deux pièces senoufo de la collection furent prêtées.

Cette collection d’environ quatre-vingt pièces présente une variété d’objets d’origines et de styles remarquable, constituant des groupes ou des ensembles distincts provenant en majorité d’Afrique de l’Ouest, voire aussi de quelques pièces d’Afrique centrale. Sont ainsi représentés les grands peuples sculpteurs du Mali, de Côte d’Ivoire, de la côte de Guinée et du Sierra Leone, et à travers quelques objets ceux du Ghana, du Bénin et enfin du Gabon. L’art dogon, l’art senoufo, l’art lobi, l’art mende, sont présents ici à travers des oeuvres majeures d’une extrême ancienneté, toutes choisies avec passion.

Les grandes statues deble, au nombre de quatre, sont les pièces les plus frappantes au premier regard. Ces sculptures imposantes ont presque toutes été sauvées des iconoclastes de la secte du Massa sévissant en pays senoufo dans les années 1950 par deux religieux français, les Pères Clamens et Convers, passionnés de culture africaine ; nombre d’objets furent retirés des flammes de justesse, d’autres encore devaient être débités comme bois de chauffage.

Elaboré à partir de recherches de terrain de nombreux chercheurs depuis les années 1950, l’ouvrage offre un aperçu unique de l’environnement dynamique de la performance tant en ce qui concerne les mascarades que la sculpture en Afrique centrale. Autant que faire ce peut, le texte privilégie les témoignages des Pende afin de comprendre les différences qui existent entre la pratique rituelle et la forme esthétique.
Soucieux du contexte historique, il relate aussi comment ces pratiques artistiques ont répondu (parfois de manière imprévisible) aux pressions coloniales et post-coloniales. Les nombreuses photographies reprennent des oeuvres emblématiques et en proposent d’autres, inédites, sélectionnées pour illustrer l’éventail complet de l’expression pende.

Zoe S. Strother est Riggio Professor of African Art à Columbia University à New York. Elle a suivi des études d’Histoire de l’art à l’université de Yale, où elle a passé son doctorat en 1992. Ces recherches s’appuient sur 32 mois de travail chez les Pende de l’est et les Pende du Centre. Elle a publié de nombreux écrits sur les Pende et notamment Inventing Masks: Agency and History in the Art of the Central Pende qui reçut le Arnold Rubin Outstanding Publication Award.

Il y a une vingtaine d'années, les auteurs, Jean-Louis Paudrat, Lucien Stéphan, Françoise Stoullig-Marin, mobilisés autour de Jacques Kerchache, tentaient la synthèse qui manquait jusqu'alors sur l'art africain et qui était évidemment attendue dans la collection " L'Art et les grandes civilisations". L'entreprise précédait toutes les publications globales ou partielles réalisées au cours des années 1990 autour d'expositions sur les arts africains. Avec l'ouverture du musée du quai Branly, une édition totalement remaniée et enrichie d'une centaine de pièces s'imposait. La plupart d'entre elles proviennent de ce nouveau musée, mais aussi de musées allemands, anglais ou américains. Donner à voir l'art africain dans son contexte artistique même, c'est le principe qui guide l'approche ici proposée. Les œuvres ne sont pas perçues de manière isolée mais confrontées les unes aux autres, ce qui permet d'appréhender par le jeu des oppositions et des similitudes, des redondances et des variations, l'univers dont elles émanent et ce qu'elles en représentent. Loin de la contemplation dévote ou de la curiosité purement ethnographique, ce livre offre une approche globale sur la sculpture africaine en abordant aussi bien les questions de style que celles des fonctions. Cet ouvrage, entièrement remis à jour et enrichi, restera sans rival et assurément encore très agissant.

De la naissance au plus grand âge, en passant par les étapes obligées du mariage et de la mise au monde de nombreux enfants, les femmes occupaient en Afrique – et occupent souvent aujourd'hui encore dans les sociétés villageoises – une place très particulière. Elles sont omniprésentes dans la sphère privée, familiale; leurs activités de même que leurs rôles sont extrêmement divers. Comment les femmes apparaissent-elles dans les arts africains ?

À travers quelque cent trente oeuvres, principalement des statues, statuettes, masques et insignes de dignité, la nouvelle exposition du musée Dapper entreprend d'évoquer la multiplicité des représentations féminines. Nécessaires et incontournables, les pratiques rituelles conduites lors des initiations et des cérémonies religieuses marquent les moments forts des cycles de vie. C'est ce que révèlent nombre de figures : les corps traduisent, tant par l'ornementation que par la gestuelle, le vécu des femmes.

En général, les corps nubiles retiennent peu l'attention des sculpteurs. Ils préfèrent assurément magnifier les formes d'une figure aux courbes exceptionnelles et harmonieuses ou sublimer les seins et le ventre bombé d'une femme enceinte, sur lequel se développent, selon les cultures, des frises de scarifications. Des motifs incisés dans la chair ont été réalisés au moment de la puberté, d'autres ont été ajoutés pour favoriser le développement de la grossesse et protéger la naissance.
À cet égard les artistes bembe (RDC) n'ont pas manqué de sculpter des figures de parturientes. La maternité constitue le thème majeur des représentations féminines dans les arts africains. Féconde et nourricière, « la femme avec enfant » est une figure idéale, et sa progéniture constitue une richesse pour le groupe. La maternité est pleinement magnifiée chez les peuples kongo (Congo et RDC) et chez les Senufo par exemple, car la femme est considérée comme étant la gardienne de la mémoire et des valeurs de la communauté. Les rôles de génitrice et de mère sont si fortement valorisés dans les sociétés africaines que les tâches et les jeux des petites filles les y préparent très tôt: elles possèdent des poupées qu'elles remplacent, au moment de l'adolescence, par d'autres qui sont conservées précieusement des années durant; ce type d'objet, parfois sculpté avec originalité, devient propitiatoire lorsqu'il est destiné, comme chez les Dowayo (Cameroun) à favoriser la fécondité. On ne saurait confiner les femmes africaines au seul espace familial, à celui de la procréation et des tâches ménagères. Certes, dans la plupart des sociétés, la différenciation sexuelle s'accompagne de codes qui règlent de façon spécifique les univers masculin et féminin.

Si aux hommes sont, en général, dévolus l'organisation et la gestion du royaume ou de la chefferie de même que les affaires religieuses, les domaines de la chasse et de la guerre, il n'en demeure pas moins que des femmes ont exercé – et exercent – le pouvoir politique et spirituel, les deux étant fréquemment liés. En témoignent bien sûr l'histoire, mais aussi les effigies qui sont plus des archétypes que de véritables portraits. Dans l'ancien royaume de Bénin (Nigeria), il était d'usage de faire couler en bronze des têtes commémoratives pour les femmes comptant parmi les hauts dignitaires de la cour: les reines mères. Ce titre fut instauré au XVIe siècle par le roi Esigie pour rendre hommage à sa mère qui fut toute-puissante. De même, il existait, vraisemblablement avant le XVIIe siècle, au sein des royaumes akan (Côte d'Ivoire / Ghana) des têtes en terre cuite façonnées par des potières ; ces oeuvres évoquent des visages d'ancêtres féminins qui auraient donné leur nom aux lignages.

La maturité et la ménopause qui voient disparaître l'impureté du corps permettent à la femme de s'inscrire enfin dans la sphère de l'autorité, des décisions réservées au monde masculin. Les deux univers demeurent néanmoins relativement éloignés. Quelques images de couple pourraient traduire leur complémentarité qui fonde l'ordre et l'harmonie du groupe. En réalité, nombre de pièces, à l'instar des sculptures dogon (Mali), revêtent une forte dimension symbolique renvoyant fréquemment à la mythologie, aux figures originelles d'un couple de jumeaux.

Les oeuvres expriment l'ambivalence de la place des femmes : leurs corps donnent forme aux statuettes, aux figures surmontant les insignes de dignité. Leurs traits ont inspiré les sculpteurs de masques, autant d'objets réalisés et manipulés par les hommes pour les cultes ou le maintien de l'ordre public. Aux femmes sont laissées la poterie et la broderie, celles-ci étant considérées comme relevant de l'artisanat.

Comment les femmes apparaissent-elles dans les arts de l’Afrique ?
Réservés aux cultes ou utilisés au quotidien, les objets sont réalisés, en général, par les hommes et pour des pratiques dont ils ont la responsabilité. Nombre d’entre eux transmettent des informations relatives non seulement à l’esthétique mais aussi aux fonctions occupées par les femmes dans la vie politique, économique, sociale et religieuse.
Les œuvres suggèrent autant l’idée de sensualité que de fécondité. Seules ou portant un enfant, les figures évoquent les rôles d’épouse, de génitrice ou de mère, la maternité constituant un thème majeur que l’on retrouve dans presque toutes les cultures. Parfois, les sujets renvoient au pouvoir exercé par certaines femmes, ancêtres, reines mères, officiantes… S’appuyant sur des textes de sociologues, d’ethnologues, d’historiens d’art, et sur une riche iconographie (œuvres de collections prestigieuses, publiques et privées, documents de terrain), cet ouvrage s’attache à évoquer la multiplicité des représentations féminines et à questionner les statuts des femmes.
Les pièces produites dans les sociétés de l’Afrique subsaharienne, de même que celles de l’Égypte ancienne, ou encore le travail photographique de l’artiste contemporaine Angèle Etoundi Essamba, nous confrontent à des univers marqués par l’ambiguïté des relations entre les hommes et les femmes.

Im Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten Marl wird für knapp zwei Monate eine Ausstallung über die Geschichte Afrikas gezeigt. Mit der Kolonialisierung fremder Kontinente entdeckten die Europäer auch die Werke anderer Kulturkreise, so auch Afrikas. Allerdings wurden diese über lange Zeit lediglich unter ethnologischem Gesichtspunkt betrachtet, wenngleich sie oftmals über eine hohe künstlerische Qualität verfügen. Erst zu Beginn des vergangenen Jahrhunderts erfuhr die außereuropäische und damit auch die afrikanische Kunst zumindest bei den Künstlern der westlichen Avantgarde eine Wertschätzung und die Künstler der `Klassischen Moderne´ ließen sich von den teilweise radikalen Formschöpfungen der afrikanischen Kunst zu neuen Ausdrucks- und Gestaltungsweisen leiten. Wenngleich die ausgestellten Skulpturen und Objekte ausschließlich aus der Region des ehemaligen Königreiches Dahomey, dem heutigen Benin, stammen, geben sie einen Eindruck von der Gestaltungsvielfalt afrikanischer Kunst. Da alle Exponate für den Vodun-Kult, der heute Staatsreligion in Benin ist, entstanden, wurden sie während ihres Gebrauches dementsprechend mehr oder weniger stark beopfert.

Le MEG met en scène cent vingt pièces exceptionnelles de sa collection afin d'initier les visiteurs aux «techniques d'enchantement» de la sculpture et des masques africains. Ces objets, au moment de leur création, avaient pour finalité d'agir sur le monde et sur les personnes, lorsqu'ils intervenaient dans des rituels initiatiques, religieux, thérapeutiques ou d'antisorcellerie.

Souvent entourés par le secret et réalisés avec une maîtrise exceptionnelle des matériaux, les masques et les sculptures apparaissaient aux initiés comme aux profanes dans des dramaturgies complexes et impressionnantes.

Cette exposition est conçue comme une initiation à l'art africain sur un fond allégorique, celui du mythe de Persée et de Medusa. Les masques ramenés au Musée après leur récolte ont conservé étrangement le pouvoir de méduser ceux qui les regardent, comme la tête de la Gorgone Medusa une fois tranchée par Persée pétrifiait ceux qui croisaient son regard.

Invitation à regarder une sélection de masques et de sculptures sous une multiplicité d'angles, du détail à l'ensemble, de la matière à la fonction sociale, cette mise en scène est aussi une invitation à réfléchir sur la place que nous réservons à ces oeuvres dans nos collections et l'utilisation que nous en faisons dans nos musées. Comment le masque figurant l'altérité radicale demeure souvent un bouclier individuel ou collectif et de quelle manière la «technologie de l'enchantement» est précisément ce qui permet aux sociétés de vivre «sous l'égide de l'art», sont des questions qui sont posées. La sculpture a été retenue parce qu'elle fascine sans doute davantage le public que d'autres aspects de la culture matérielle. C'est à cela qu'aspire cette exposition avant tout: faire découvrir au public la fascination exercée par ces oeuvres tant dans leur contexte d'origine qu'aujourd'hui, face aux visiteurs dans l'institution muséale.

The exhibition is designed to provide an introduction to African art against an allegorical backdrop, that of the myth of Perseus and Medusa. The masks brought back to the Museum have retained the disquieting power to mesmerise those who look at them, just like the severed head of the Gorgon Medusa petrified those who caught its gaze.

This exhibition is an invitation to look at a selection of masks and sculptures from a multiplicity of points of view, in detail and as a whole, in terms of the materials they are made of and of their social function. It also invites us to reflect on the place that these works occupy in our collections and the use we make of them in our museums. How a mask representing radical otherness often remains an individual or collective shield, a means of warding off evil, and how the "technology of enchantment" is precisely what enables societies to live "under the aegis of art" are questions that are addressed. Sculpture was chosen because it is no doubt more compelling for the public than other aspects of material culture. Therein lays the overarching goal of this exhibition: to have the public discover the fascination exerted by these works both in their original context and in their present setting, confronted by visitors in a museum.

African headrests have been moved out of the category of functional objects and into the more rarefied category of 'art' objects. Styles in African headrests are usually defined in terms of western art and archaeological discourses, but this book interrogates these definitions of style through a case study of headrests of the 'Tellem' of Mali.
Synopsis:
"African Dream Machines" questions the assumed one-to-one relationship between formal styles and ethnic identities or classifications. The notion of 'authenticity' as a fixed value in relation to African art is de-stabilised, while historical factors are used to demonstrate that 'authenticity', in the form sought by collectors of antique African art, is largely a construct, which has no basis in historical reality.
The final chapter seeks to understand the significance of African headrests in relation to a number of different perspectives: the western fascination with the headrest as a synecdoche for "otherness"; their iconography in terms of subject matter (human and animal figures); and the ways in which headrests are used as support to the head of a sleeping person.
Each of the many headrests discussed is illustrated in a drawing by the author.

Beauty can be neither explained nor experienced through words. For this reason the author has intentionally reduced text and comments to a minimum, illustrating the beauty of African art in over two hundred large colour photographs of valuable items belonging to the Matthaes collection, now conserved and exhibited in a special section of the Museo d'Arte e... (Museo D'Arte e Scienza Milano Matthaes Gottfried, Beauty Authenticity African).
At the end of 2007, the Management of the Museo d'Arte e Scienza decided to assemble a catalogue also for the African section, which was to include both an assessment of the beauty and an evaluation of the authenticity of the objects. The idea was to capitalize on the long personal experience gained over the years and the results obtained by the Museum's scientific laboratory, using the finest equipment and most advanced analytical methods for the determination of authenticity. Initially intended to be published in two volumes, the work was united in a single volume of 384 pages with over 300 objects dated using the IR spectroscopic method and illustrated in as many artistic colour photographs.

La pratique de la scarification semble presque aussi vieille que la civilisation.
Selon les ethnologues, ce sont les Aborigènes d'Australie qui l'ont mise au point et adoptée pour accompagner les rites de passage à l'âge adulte. Des cérémonies nécessaires au bon fonctionnement de la société puisqu'elles permettaient à chacun de connaître sa place et son rôle au sein de cette dernière. La technique s'est ensuite propagée avec plus ou moins de succès. Les médecins de l'Antiquité et du Moyen âge s'en sont inspirés pour mettre au point la saignée. Plus tard, elle sera utilisée pour soigner certaines maladies de la peau comme la couperose. En Europe et aux Etats-Unis, la scarification est aujourd'hui associée à un comportement pathologique appelé l'automutilation. Des adolescents se scarifient eux-mêmes pour "faire sortir" la détresse éprouvée, remplacer une douleur émotionnelle par une douleur physique, plus supportable, ou pour marquer leur appartenance à un groupe. Rares sont les endroits du monde où la scarification a conservé sa fonction initiale, conférée par les Aborigènes. Elle ne se pratique plus qu'en Afrique de l'Ouest, particulièrement au Nord du Bénin, où une quarantaine d'ethnies lui attribuent plusieurs rôles. Dont un, primordial. La vallée de l’Omo, située au sud-ouest de l’Éthiopie, figure sur la Liste du patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco. Dénommée à juste titre « berceau de l’humanité », elle constitue un site paléontologique exceptionnel où furent découverts plusieurs ancêtres de l’homme. La nature y est splendide, et l’on y compte plusieurs parcs nationaux. Considérée aujourd’hui comme une des régions les plus reculées du continent africain, la vallée de l’Omo est le creuset culturel d’une dizaine de peuples pasteurs en survie dans un environnement austère.
L’exposition La section d’Ethnographie du Musée royal de l’Afrique centrale possède plus de 1 000 objets récoltés auprès de ces différentes tribus, ce qui représente une des plus importantes collections de cette région.
L’exposition propose un regard singulier sur les peuples pasteurs de la vallée de l’Omo et sur leurs relations avec l’environnement. Elle porte l’attention sur l’esthétique de simples objets de la vie quotidienne et explique le rôle joué par ceux-ci au sein d’une société qui doit s’adapter sans cesse aux lois de la nature. L'exposition décrit aussi les nouveaux enjeux sociaux et géopolitiques, et les récents défis de ces petites communautés nomades.

The Omo River Valley in south-western Ethiopia is home to 12 pastoral tribes. They speak different languages, and most of them have migrated to the region during the last three centuries. In total they number approximately 110,000 and occupy an area of 24,000 sq. km. Life in the Omo River Valley is is hard and survival is a constant preoccupation.
Cattle occupy a central place in the economy and the philosophy of these herders. Sustaining their livestock largely determines the way in which they live and compels them to a demanding semi-nomadic existence.
Despite this, these pastoral people devote a surprising amount of attention to the design of their everyday objects. Then there are also the Visual codes embedded in the headdress, ornamentations and clothing express the identity of the individual and the group. can be identified.
With more than 1,250 objects, the Royal Museum for Central Africa possesses one of the most varied and important collections of the pastoral people of the Omo River Valley. Some of these objects are now being displayed for the first time.
