This is an early book on the arts of West Africa. From the book: "The examples of carving and other handiwork which are illustrated in this volume have, with one exception, been drawn from West Africa. They are from the regions between Senegal and Angola. But the majority of the works which have been chosen for reproduction come from British territories -- Gambia, Sierra Leone, the Gold Coast, Nigeria, and the British sphere of the Cameroons."
The book opens with an Introduction by Sir William Rothenstein, and is followed by three essays: Significance and Vitality of African Art by Sir Michael Sadler; Educational Significance of Indigenous African Art by G.A. Stevens; Teaching Wood-Carving at Achimota by Gabriel Pippet.
There are 32 full-page duotone photographic plates, with 67 pages of in-depth descriptive notes on each piece by Richard Carline. Highlights include: wood carved figures and masks from the Egba-Yoruba, Bavili, Baoule, Ba-Luba, Bakota, Yoruba, Maniema, the Mendi, the Ba-Pende, Ashira, Ibo; earthenware figures and vessels from the Fanti, Ashanti, Dahomey; skin-covered wood masks, painted with metal eyes from the Ekoi; wooden stools from the Ashanti; gourds and basket tray from the Kongo, Bubi, Efik, Mendi, and Bibe; musical instruments from the Commi, Bakalai, Chekiani, Basonge; ceremonial head rests from the Ba-Mbala and Zombo; canoe paddles from the Jekri, Sobo, and Mussorongo; gold weights from the Ashanti.

Bevat het reisverhaal van de befaamde kunstkenner Olbrechts naar Ivoorkust.
Dit in de jaren 30 toen veel streken nog niet door de westerse cultuur beïnvloed waren.
De Belgische wetenschapper Frans Olbrechts  (1899 - 1958) heeft de studie van de Afrikaanse kunst sterk beïnvloed. Hij kan worden beschouwd als een van de ‘geestelijke vaders’ van de etnografie. Olbrechts was een van de eersten om de Afrikaanse kunst niet als louter etnografie maar als kunst te beschrijven én tentoon te stellen. Dankzij zijn veldwerk bij diverse Noord-Amerikaanse Indianen (hij doceerde o.a. aan de Columbia University) en een tocht door West-Afrika in 1938-9 begreep hij dat men de kunst van niet-westerse culturen enkel kon doorgronden wanneer men ze ter plaatse bestudeerde. Het boek 'Maskers en Dansers in de Ivoorkust' heeft Olbrechts aan het door hemzelf geleide begin van deze expeditie gewijd. Het was de bedoeling, dat het onderzoek aan de Ivoorkust tevens de voorbereiding zou worden van een uitgebreid onderzoek in de Kongo, zodra daartoe de gelegenheid zou zijn gekomen. Maar natuurlijk zorgde het uitbreken van WOII ervoor dat die gelegenheid er niet kwam.
Dit boek werd uitgebracht in de 'Volksreeks' van het Davidsfonds en is dus voor een breed publiek geschreven (op zich al vooruitstrevend in die tijd) en bevat 37 tekeningen van West-Afrikaanse kunstvoorwerpen.
