- 2002-12-04 Carlos Gershenson, a young Mexican computer scientist, with a MSc from the School of Cognitive and Computer Sciences at the University of Sussex has joined CLEA to work on a PhD modelling the emergence of higher levels of cognition through simulated interactions between agents in a virtual world.
- 2001-12-18 On July 2-5, the Research Community on the 'Construction of Integrating Worldviews', which is coordinated by CLEA, in collaboration with the Global Brain Group has organized an international workshop at the VUB. The theme was 'From Intelligent Networks to the Global Brain'. Abstracts (and sometimes full papers) of the 20 presentations are available on the web.

- 2001-12-01 Ellen Van Keer and Nicole Note join the Center Leo Apostel on a doctoral scholarship starting from January 1, 2002. Liane Gabora, from January 1, 2002, and Jaroslaw Pykacz, from February 1, 2002, are engaged as visiting professor in the Center Leo Apostel. Diederik Aerts, Thomas Durt and Marek Czachor finish the editing of a book titled "Probing the Structure of Quantum Mechanics: Nonlinearity, Nonlocality, Computation and Axiomatics" that will be published with World Scientific, Singapore.

- 2001-10-01 Johan Bollen, collaborator of the Center Leo Apostel, has defended maxime cum laude a PhD in psychology with the title "A cognitive model of adaptive web design and navigation". PhD director was Frank Van Overwalle and co-director Francis Heylighen. The jury was composed of Cliff Joslyn (DKSM, Los Alamos National Laboratory), Luis Rocha (DKSM, Los Alamos National Laboratory), Peter Foltz (New Mexico State University), Eric Soetens (Dep. Psychology, VUB), Peter Theuns (Dep. Psychology, VUB), Axel Cleeremans (Dep. Psychology, ULB).
- 2001-08-01 A project titled "A systematic investigation of the role and meaning of music in Greek antique mythology" has been funded for the Center Leo Apostel by Brussels Free University. The project will start January 1, 2002, and run till December 31, 2005.
- 2001-07-01 Liane Gabora, collaborator of the Center Leo Apostel, has defended maxime cum laude a PhD in science with the title "Cognitive mechanisms underlying the origin and evolution of culture". PhD director was Diederik Aerts and the jury was composed of Merlin Donald (Dep. Psychology, Queen's University), Jim Lake, Francis Heylighen (Center Leo Apostel, VUB), Philip Polk (Dep. Biology, VUB), Luc Steels (Artificial Intelligence Lab., VUB), Jean Paul Van Bendeghem (Dep. Philosophy, VUB), and Nicole De Grande (Dep. of Mathematics, VUB).
- 2001-06-01 The Center Leo Apostel had several projects funded at the Belgian National Fund for Scientific research that will run over the coming four years. One of the projects titled "Development of a Contextual Theory of Concepts" investigates the developement of a formalism for the description of concepts that takes into account their contextual nature by applying an approach from quantum structures research. Another project titled "Development of a Contextual, Nondeterministic Theory of Evolution" investigates the importance of contextuality for evolution theory in biology. A third project titled "A cultural anthropological investigation on the relation between 'connectedness' and 'individual freedom'" investigates how the forces of connectedness and individual freedom have shaped our actual society.
- 2001-05-01 One of the collaborators of CLEA, Sonja Smets has defended maxime cum laude a PhD in philosophy with the title "The Logic of Physical Properties in Static and Dynamic Perspective" at Brussels Free University. PhD director was Jean Paul Van Bendeghem and co-director Diederik Aerts. The jury was composed of Maria Luisa Dalla Chiara (Dep. of Philosophy, University of Firenze), Jim Lambek (McGill, Montreal), Macieck Malinowski and Gustaaf Cornelis (Dep. of Philosophy, VUB).
- Liane Gabora will stay two more years at CLEA, from October 1, 2000, until September 30, 2002. Jan Broekaert has a post-doc position at the FWO starting from October 1, 2000, until September 30, 2003.
- The interdisciplinary Space-Time Research Group has put up a webpage.
- CLEA has attracted a major project from the Flemish Community: "Integrating worldviews: research on the interdisciplinary construction of a model of reality with ethical and practical relevance" (Impulse Program Humanities. Caw96/54a,b,c). Many researchers have been active on the project. For the VUB: Jan Broekaert, Sonja Smets, Liane Gabora, for the UG: Wim Christiaens, for the KUL: Johan Deklerck and Anouk Depuydt . A special page dedicated to the results of this project will be up soon!
- CLEA has once more engaged in the organisation of the studium generale 'STEMMEN'. This year the focus will be on actual social problems relating to 'Identity, and Otherness'. Please mind although that most of the program will be in dutch.
- Leor Gründlinger, an Israeli computer scientist, has joined CLEA as a PhD student, to work on the analogies between the interaction between neurons in the brain and social processes of communication between agents.
- Alexander Riegler has received a 3-year PostDoc contract from the FWO to work at CLEA
- Johan Bollen is on leave from CLEA for a one year study visit at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he is working for the "Library without walls" project under the guidance of Cliff Joslyn
- Diederik Aerts, CLEA's director, is the new editor-in-chief of the journal "Foundations of Science", published by Kluwer Academic. CLEA researchers Jan Broekaert and Liane Gabora functions as assistant-editors.
- Liane Gabora, a researcher from the Center for the Study of Evolution and the Origin of Life, UCLA, has started to work at CLEA since Oct. 1, 1998 on, on a two year research contract. She will be focusing on the emergence of culture during human evolution.
