COBI : Cognitive & Biological Psychology

Cognitive Psychology is the study of the basic mechanisms and functions of human behaviour. It can also be defined as the study of human mental processes and their role in perceiving, thinking, feeling and behaving. The broad categories of study are sensation and perception, attention and consciousness, learning and memory, acquisition of knowledge and expertise, basic processes of language and thinking, emotion and motivation, reasoning and problem solving, and learning and controlling of action. Although empirical research lies at the basis of cognitive psychology, also mathematical models and computer simulations provide an important contribution.
In Biological Psychology the relationships between bodily states and behavior are studied. In this field, all the physiological systems in the body are investigated (e.g., nervous system, endocrine system, respiratory system, immune system, and cardiovascular system). 'Behavior' includes diverse activities such as attention, sleep, stress, problem solving, motor speed, emotions etc. In our department, the research into physiology and behavior concentrates on the brain (neuropsychology), especially with regard to sleep, sleepiness and cognitive performance.
