Current and past research

Luca received his Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Turin, Italy in 2005. He obtained a Master degree in Environmental Engineering from the Land, Environment and Geo-Engineering Department of the same university in 2007. During his master studies he spend one year at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain as an exchange student. He prepared his master thesis at the Department of Hydrology and Hydraulic Engineering of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium. Following his strong interest in remote sensing, GIS and geosciences, his dissertation focused on the application of high-resolution remote sensing in spatially distributed water recharge modeling of urban environments (case study Brussels). In August 2007, after obtaining his master degree, he joined the Geography Department of the Vrije Universiteit Brussels to work as a research scientist on a project on the use of high-resolution remotely sensed data for urban mapping. More specifically, he is investigating how high-resolution airborne image data and LiDAR data may be used in updating of the large-scale reference database (GRB) of Flanders.
