Ph.D. thesis
Characterizing urban form and function using high-resolution remote sensing
Promoter: Prof. dr. Frank Canters
Abstract
The goal of my research is to develop a method which is able to describe different types of urban form and to link urban form to urban land use, making use of remotely sensed images.
The development of such a method is needed for making a frequent update of land-use maps possible. Mapping land use is essential in regional strategic planning, but also in providing the required data for urban growth modeling.
Innovative in the development of such a method, as proposed in my research, is the definition and implementation of a set of spatial metrics which are able to distinguish different kinds of urban morphology in high-resolution remotely sensed imagery. Afterwards, the different types of urban form identified will be linked to functional land-use types, such as residential, commercial or industrial land use, by combining information on urban morphology, derived from the remotely sensed data, with socio-economic and other information obtained from ancillary data sets.
The method will be developed on the city of Gent, Belgium. Later on, the applicability on other urban areas, with comparable as well as clearly distinct urban morphologies, will be tested.
