The Centre for Ethics and Humanism and the Centre for Logic and Philosophy of Science of the Free University Brussel (VUB) are delighted to announce the PhD-workshop Rediscovering Fichte to be held in Brussels on 8 December 2016 and with financial support of the Doctoral School of Human Sciences (VUB).

In the past decades, academic philosophy has witnessed an expanding ‘back-to-Fichte’ movement. In the wake of this revival, the stubborn received view of Johann Gottlieb Fichte’s work as an unworldly metaphysics articulated through an egotistical logic has given way to a more charitable reception. ETHU member Sonja Lavaert, together with colleague of Marburg University Winfried Schröder, edited a book volume titled The Dutch Legacy that has now been published with Brill.

While Spinoza’s impact on the early Enlightenment has always found due attention of historians of philosophy, several 17th-century Dutch thinkers who were active before Spinoza’s Tractatus theologico-politicus was published have been largely neglected (more…)

Spreker: Johan Moyaert, van opleiding natuurkundig ingenieur en filosoof, was assistent van Rudolf Boehm aan de UGent en van 1980 tot 1997 hoofdredacteur van het filosofietijdschrift Kritiek. Hij heeft gepubliceerd over Adam Smith, de Tocqueville, Feuerbach, Marx, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty en Ch. Lasch. Hij is de auteur van Kritiek van de ascetische rede (2004). Hij geeft regelmatig lezingen in de reeks ‘Kopstukken van de filosofie’. (more…)
