Research seminar Virtual Media 2011-2012 – McLuhan’s Centennial Anniversary

This year’s edition of the research seminar ‘Virtual Media’ seizes Marshall McLuhan’s (1911-1980) 100th anniversary to explore the work and thought of the Canadian media theorist. In a series of sessions, spread over this academic year, we will deal with selected writings from two posthumously published books, Laws of Media: The New Science (1988; co-authored with Eric McLuhan) and The Global Village: Transformations in World Life and Media in the 21st Century (1989; co-authored with Bruce R. Powers). In both works McLuhan explains and summarizes his ideas about media effects through the model of ‘the tetrad’.

The seminar starts officially with our Centennial Conference ‘McLuhan’s Philosophy of Media’ (26-28 October 2011). For all information, see:

The next session will be held Wednesday, November 9th 2011, 10-12pm, where the goals, expectations and plans of the seminar will be clarified further.

Since this seminar aims at deepening insight and discussing skills in theoretical debates, it expects from participants a thorough reading of the texts and a critical and engaged participation in the sessions.

Workshop on the History of Logic

Op donderdag 10 november organiseert het Belgisch Genootschap voor Logica en Wetenschapsfilosofie in de namiddag een workshop over de geschiedenis van de logica, met als sprekers Arianna Betti (Amsterdam), Stephen Read (St Andrews) en Wilfrid Hodges (Londen). Locatie is het sfeervolle Paleis der Academiën, pal in het centrum van Brussel. Een tentoonstelling over wiskunde van en met Prof. dr. Jean Paul Van Bendegem

Op vraag van de Dienst Cultuur, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, ging Prof. dr. Jean Paul Van Bendegem de uitdaging aan om een expositie samen te stellen over de relatie tussen kunst en wiskunde. Het resultaat is een tentoonstelling die wiskunde toont op een manier waarop u dit nooit eerder ervaarde.

Marshall McLuhan (1911-1980): media theorist, cultural critic, provoker. Undoubtedly influential. Pitching phrases like ‘the medium is the message’ and ‘the global village,’ McLuhan rose to stardom in the 1960s, only to see his fame decay during the last decade of his life. Since the early 1990s however, his ideas have been gradually rediscovered by academics and pop culture alike. The digital revolution made him, retrospectively, a quite accurate analyst of the information era, even a visionary in the eyes of some. Within communication studies, cultural studies, sociology, and philosophy, his insights remain fertile ground for anyone trying to understand the interactions of humans, technologies, and media environments.

Het onderzoeksseminarie ‘Virtuele media’, editie voorjaar 2011, is gewijd aan een van de meest prominente ‘filosofen van de technologie’ van dit ogenblik. De kritische Amerikaanse denker Andrew Feenberg (1943) incorporeert in zijn bejubelde werk rond de sociaal-politieke gesitueerdheid van technologieën inzichten afkomstig uit de meest diverse theoretische bronnen, zij het alle kritisch.
