Peter Scholliers

Department of History (HIST)

Peter Scholliers studied history at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1984 with a dissertation on wages, purchasing power and the standard of living in Belgium in the interwar period. In his research he focusses on the history of the standard of living, labor history, wages en prices, material culture, industrial archaeology and on the history of food. He was a researcher at the Center for Contemporary Social History between 1976 and 1985. In 1986, he became a staff member of the Department of History at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Since 2000, he is also a lecturer at that department.
He is a member of the editorial staff of Food & History, Food and Foodways and Food, Culture & Society. On top of that he is vice president of the International Committee for the Research of European Food History (ICREFH) and he is a member of the Comité d'Orientation of the Institut Européen d'Histoire et des Cultures de l'Alimentation (IEHCA). As a member of FOST, he is supervisor of the Ph.D. thesis of Daniëlle De Vooght and Anneke Geyzen and co-supervisor of the Ph.D. thesis of Steven Van den Berghe and Inge Mestdag.
