prof. dr. Tony Mets (MD, PhD)

He is specialist in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics and full professor in Gerontology and Geriatrics at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). He is also head of the department for Geriatrics of the Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel (out-patients facilities, day hospital, hospitalisation, diagnostic facilities; laboratory) and coordinator of the Gerontology department (longitudinal studies in the elderly; physical training for elderly, laboratory facilities) at Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. His research is focussed on the domain of clinical medicine (frailty, sarcopenia, dementia, inflammation) and mechanisms of aging (cellular senescence)

prof dr. Ivan Bautmans (PhD, MSc Physiotherapy, MSc Manual Therapy);

He is professor in Geriatric Rehabilitation, Fitness & Ageing, and Research Methodology at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), where he is member of the University Governing Body and the University Governing Council. He is an expert in the evaluation of muscular function and physical training of elderly persons and he is also trained in sEMG. His research is focused on researching the underlying mechanisms, prevention and treatment of muscle weakness and muscle atrophy at higher age, with particular interest for the role of inflammatory processes.

Prof. dr. Ellen Gorus (PhD, MSc Gerontology, MSc Psychology)

She has a Master in Clinical Psychology and Gerontology and a PhD in Gerontology. She is a member of the department of gerontology at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). She teaches on psychological aspects of ageing (life cycle, psychogeriatrics, assessment, …). She also works as a clinical psychologist in the Geriatric dayhospital of University Hospital Brussel (UZBrussel), where she is responsible for the cognitive and emotional assessment of geriatric patients. Her research activities are primarily aimed at the early detection of Alzheimer's disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment, active ageing in frail elderly, psychosocial aspects of physical activity in frail elderly.

She is working as academic and postdoctoral researcher at respectively the departments Gerontology and FRIA of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. She is focused on inflammation and its relation to Heat shock proteins (hsp), and has developed several determination techniques for Hsp.
