Education and professional career:

D.J. Devine BA LLB NUI LLB Unisa LLD Cape Town; Solicitor of the Supreme Court in Ireland; Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. Emeritus Professor Devine practised as a solicitor in Ireland before being appointed Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court of Kenya in 1960. He joined the Department of Roman and Comparative Law as a lecturer in 1963. In 1973 he moved to Brussels as Director in the Directorate General, Internal Market (from 1977 Directorate General, Internal Market and Industrial Affairs), Commission of the European Communities. He returned to Cape Town in 1984 as Director of the Institute of Marine and Environmental Law. His special interests include the Law of the Sea, European Union Law and Public International Law and he has more than 100 publications in these and other areas.

Period at INTR:

The Centre for International Law was the Host Institution for the University Foreign Francqui Chair 2001-2002. "Coastal State Jurisdiction Relating to Marine Pollution" was the theme under which the Centre for International Law of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel served as Host-Institution for this Chair. The latter was organized in cooperation with the Maritime Institute of the Ghent University. Prof. em. Dermott Devine of the University of Cape Town, South Africa, holder of this Chair, was during 6 months in close contact with Belgian specialists in this area, creating that way a class of excellence. He also presented a number of lectures (December 3, 2001 to May 17, 2002).

Funding

This project, amounting to about 2 million BEF (50.000 EURO), was terminated in May 2002 with an international workshop at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
