Starting as a lawyer at the Brussels bar, Dirk De Bot has occupied various legal functions in the private sector, mainly in the financial sector (legal advisor, compliance manager, head of the legal and tax department of the Directorate Life and Health Insurance). Since 1 September 2010 he has decided to interrupt his professional career for one year in order to finish his PhD. This research focuses on the question how the legal framework on the processing on personal data can contribute to the success of e-government, taking into account the specific state structure in Belgium (how contemporary can one be?). To this effect, he has applied for and obtained a Special Ph.D. fellowship of the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO).

Dirk has published several books and articles on data protection and is the author of what is generally considered to be the basic handbook on the Belgian law on the processing of personal data that was published in Dutch in 2001 under the title Verwerking van persoonsgegevens. Since 2010 he also contributes to the review P&I (Privacy and Information) in the section Actualities from Belgium, covering actual topics on data protection in Belgium. In the past he was a regular speaker on seminars on data protection.

He is also a lecturer at the UAMS (University of Antwerp Management School) in the Masterclass Forensic Auditing on the item about privacy.
