Rosamunde van Brakel has studied at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and University of Ottawa and obtained degrees in both educational sciences and criminology. She has been a visiting researcher at the Surveillance Studies Centre at Queens University in Canada, is an expert in the EU COST-LISS project and is Associate Member Representative on the Network and Editorial Board of the Surveillance Studies Network. Since 2006 she has been doing doctoral research on pre-emptive surveillance of children at the Centre for Criminological Research at the University of Sheffield, which will be continued at LSTS from March 2011 in the context of the FP7 SIAM project. The doctoral research focuses on the social, ethical and legal issues involved in the implementation of pre-emptive surveillance technologies in the context of crime prevention. Research Interests include: surveillance studies, sociology of crime control, technology and policing, children's rights, history of normality and deviance, philosophy of technology, science and technology studies.
