Abstract:

The National Migration Data Bank is an anonymous individual record linkage between the 1991 census file and migration records for 1981-1995. In addition, a second individual record file was made available for all migrations across municipal boundaries covering 1991-1996, including a set of selected covariates (among which household size). Similar databanks were constructed on fertility, mortality and household positions (LIPRO). The construction of the National Migration Data Bank was essential for the research done on differential migration according to household characteristics and socio-economic variables. This data bank also made it possible to calculate the household membership rates that were used as input for the municipal population projections. Similarly, the data banks on fertility and mortality lead to numerous applications and 2 PhD dissertations (Karel Neels & Sylvie Gadeyne) were based on data that could only be obtained through these data banks.
