David P. GILLIKIN Vrije Universiteit Brussel Ph.D. in Science |
![]() |
After completing his B.Sc. in Environmental Geology, David worked for a number of years in materials testing and environmental monitoring in New York State. He later completed a M.Sc. in Ecological Marine Management, where his thesis dealt primarily with the ecophysiology of Kenyan mangrove crabs.
David joined the CALMARS group in 2001 under the supervision of F. Dehairs (promoter), W. Baeyens (co-promoter) and E. Keppens (co-promoter) to calibrate bivalves as recorders of their environment. He is especially interested in drawing on his background in physiology to unravel the physiological signal which is often superimposed on environmental signals in most biological carbonates. David is working primarily on two estuaries, one in Europe (the Schelde) and the other in North Carolina USA (Wade Creek), but is also working in the tropics (Kenya). David obtained his PhD and will soon be moving back to the US.
