Market for sustainable development in higher education


The Market for Sustainable Development in higher education will take place in the Baudouin Building in Brussels on Friday, March 5th. The Vrije Universiteit Brussel is also represented with two tables and two round-table workshops:

  • Table 1: VUB and UAB: Sustainable together
    The objective is to provide an overview of sustainable initiatives that are running at the VUB, relating to both personnel and students of the educational institution.
    Initiatives: EcoTeams and Ecolleagues, non-profit organisation UCOS, Together Sustainable Taskforce, Energy efficiency cross-talk project, VUB goes green, Bike workgroup and VUB biking point (Dimitri Devuyst). This will possibly also include Scientific Communication.
  • Table 2: KLIMOS, Environment & Climate for development cooperation and Sustainable Higher Education in the South (Tom Waas)
  • Round-table workshop 1: Course in sustainable materials, with last year’s practical demonstration of recycling a PC (Hubert Rahier).
  • Round-table workshop 2: Sustainable construction: best case in Flanders: analysis, indicators, approach and processing of the best case in Flanders (case to be determined) (Marleen Wynants)

 

Discover the secret behind the best practical examples
How can sustainable development be integrated into higher education? Or, in other words, how can higher education search for and pinpoint maintainable solutions relating to current ecological, economic, cultural, ethical, technological and social-political issues? And how are the three P's (people, planet, prosperity) integrated into Flemish colleges and universities?

The European Parliament's Green Credentials – An analysis of the EP and co-decision for the environment.


The Institute for European Studies (IES) at the Vrije Universitetit Brussel and the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) kindly invite you to their next Environmental Policy Forum on 8 March. Charlotte Burns will present the results of a study on the European Parliament's green credentials in the co-decision procedure in the 2000s, which investigated whether the European Parliament is an environmental champion and whether co-decision has been good for the environment. Ms. Burns worked in the European Parliament as a Research Assistant to the Chair of the Environment Committee for two years before undertaking her PhD at the University of Sheffield. She currently teaches at the University of Leeds.

Commenting on Ms. Burns presentation will be Professor Doctor Ludwig Krämer, Honorary professor for European environmental law at the universities of Bremen and Copenhagen and visiting professor at University College, London and working with the Commission for three decades as Head of Unit of Legal Affairs, Waste, waste management and environmental governance in DG Environment.

  • The event will take place on Monday 8 March 2010, from 12.00 to 14.00 at the IES, Pleinlaan 15, 5th floor, 1050 Brussels
  • The programme will start at 12.00 with a lunch reception.
  • The presentations will be followed by an open discussion.
