  • Patrick Stewart, VUB eredoctor 2015Friday the 29th of May, VUB awards eight honorary doctorates. Seven names were already known. VUB is glad to announce that another famous name has been added to this list: Sir Patrick Stewart. The British actor, who plays the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation, is recognised as being an invaluable source of inspiration for future engineers, scientists, and scientific research in general.

  • yves van ingelgemThe prestigious MIT Technology Review named mechanical and materials engineer Yves Van Ingelgem Belgian ‘Innovator of the Year’. After his studies at the VUB Faculty of Engineering, Yves founded Zensor, a VUB spin-off that thoroughly innovated the early detection of corrosion in industrial installations.

  • VUB Eredoctoraten 2015At the end of May, the Free University Brussels (VUB) will award its 2015 honorary doctorates to prominent scientists and individuals who have made outstanding contributions to society. For example, the Surinamese politician Marie Levens, the Kenyan Fransisca Anyango and former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard will receive an honorary doctorate for their commitment to giving as many children as possible access to good quality education. In fact, Julia Gillard already received her honorary doctorate in February.

A joint honorary doctorate will be awarded to Lucie Van Crombrugge and, posthumously, to the gynaecologist Willy Peers who died in 1984, for their efforts in the fight for the right to abortion. And finally, honorary doctorates will be awarded to the Italian gene and cell therapy pioneer, Luigi Naldini, and the renowned British historian, Peter Burke.

The awards will be presented at 10.30 a.m. on 29 May in Auditorium Q of the Etterbeek campus.
