Open science. Towards a new paradigm?

What can make science more performant, more efficient and more transparent? Easy, free access to research results. The idea of open science or open access is controversial, but gains more and more support. Mrs Neelie Kroes, vice-president of the European Commission stated: "To make progress in science, we need to be open and share." The European Union is currently implementing a principle where the granting of research money is directly linked to the publication of the research results online. This kind of accesability could improve the quality of research thoroughly. Wishful thinking or an evolution that the academic world needs to take seriously?? The 2nd VUB PhD Research Day sheds a light on the issue.
What is PhD Research Day?

• A day on which all 1,500 VUB PhD students meet each other and present their project to the entire VUB community • Complete with keynote presentation and additional panel discussion • After lunch: presentations and panel discussions by faculty • a multidisciplinary poster session with individual and group posters • and a big reception.

12.30pm Multi disciplinary poster session - 150 junior researchers are given the opportunity to present their work through a poster. The poster session takes place in La Chaufferie, right next to L'Arsenal. The poster session will be freely accessible between 12:30pm and 05:00pm

The panel discussions for the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty Science / Bio-engineering Sciences (both part of the doctoral School of Natural Sciences and (Bioscience) Engineering NSE) is replaced by two sessions that are composed out of

•             an introduction where each PhD researcher promotes his/her poster using 1 slide and a 1 minute presentation,

•             the poster sessions with coffee and refreshments included.

 

Both sessions will be chaired by the director of the doctoral school NSE, Prof.dr.ir. Gerd Vandersteen.

 

 

 

EVENING

05:00pm Reception in L'Arsenal. Our PhD studies can meet up with each other here and exchange experiences. After the closing words and the ‘Best Poster Awards’, everyone can let their hair down on the dance floor.
