Coding Theory and Computer Architecture

Abstract: Over the last 50 years, a variety of media have been used to store information, and each time a new storage technology is proposed, it presents new challenges for coding theorists and system designers. It is to some extent the interdisciplinary collaboration between computer architects and coding theorists that has enabled a factor 10,000 increase in storage density since 1990. I will describe how architecture problems have driven development of new theory, and how advances in coding theory have driven development of new systems that can take advantage of them. 

I will consider two different physical technologies. The first is NAND Flash, the dominant technology of solid state drives. The second is racetrack memory, a more speculative technology that promises dramatic improvement in storage density.
