The Brussels Speaker series on Algorithms & Platforms at Vrije Universiteit Brussel is a monthly meeting of academics, students, policy makers, civil society experts and industry professionals interested in the study of algorithms, platforms and online services. The speaker series addresses a variety of challenges with respect to algorithmic governance, including transparency, accountability, diversity, public values, auditing and oversight, (measurements of) social and economic impact, as well as implications for fundamental rights, potential discriminatory impacts and bias, the political economy of their production, and engagement of the broader public.

We host talks about ongoing research and initiatives, and provide an interdisciplinary forum for connecting technical, social and economic research challenges to broader societal and policy dynamics.

The speaker series is an initiative of the interdisciplinary Research Group on Law Science Technology & Society, the Chair in Fundamental Rights and the Digital Transformation and the research centre imec-SMIT (Studies on Media, Innovation and Technology). We welcome participation and attendance from all interested academics, civil society experts, industry professionals, and policy makers. We encourage attendants to commit to ongoing participation during the semester.

The first meeting will take place on 11 January, 12:30-14:00. For more information, please email algorithms-platforms@smitresearch.be.
