1. Development and empirical evaluation of language teaching methods

Focus:
•    cognitive linguistic approaches to teaching vocabulary and phraseology
•    phrase-learning approaches (e.g. The Lexical Approach)
•    effectiveness of mnemonics in language learning (e.g. Dual Coding and Deep Processing)
•    individual differences in language learning (e.g. cognitive style variables)

2. Development and evaluation of language tests

Focus:
•    proficiency test formats that strike a balance between the requirements of validity, inter-rater reliability and positive affect
•    test formats to measure FL phrasal knowledge

3. Applied comparative and cultural linguistics

Focus:
•   cross-lingual / cross-cultural comparisons of idiom repertoires and phraseology, and their relevance of for language pedagogy
•   the pedagogical effectiveness of comparative considerations in the FL classroom
