International conference
SOCIOCULTURAL COMPETENCE & LANGUAGE LEARNING IN MULTILINGUAL SETTINGS
Vrije Universiteit Brussel, BRUSSELS
18-19 September 2014

Current language pedagogy is more and more confronted with notions such as ‘intercultural learning’, ‘intercultural communication’ and ‘multicultural society’. In spite of this growing interest, we still know little about the actual realization of what is referred to as ‘sociocultural competence’ within the setting of multilingual education.

The international conference “Sociocultural Competence & Language Learning in Multilingual Settings” will bring together researchers and language teachers from across the globe interested in the role of sociocultural competence and intercultural communication in language learning and teaching. It aims to generate new insights on a range of topics, such as discussions of theoretical frameworks, methodological decisions and practical implications.

As part of the conference, we are proud to announce as plenary speakers:

  • Em. Prof. Dr. Hugo Baetens-Beardsmore (Vrije Universiteit Brussel / Université Libre de Bruxelles): "The Cultural Element in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) Programmes"
  • Prof. Dr. Jean-Marc Dewaele (University of London): "The acquisition of sociolinguistic, sociopragmatic and sociocultural competence in multilingual settings"
  • Prof. Dr. Frank Boers (Victoria University of Wellington): "Memory matters in language learning and textbook design"

Conference program:

Day 1 & 2: plenary sessions and papers.
Day 2: workshops for language teachers.

On Wednesday, September 17th, there will be a Langscape Convention (Members and Board of Directors): 16.00-18.00 (at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Pleinlaan 2, 1050 Brussels, Building C, 5th floor, Room 5C402).
Non-members/associate researchers are welcome and kindly requested to notify the co-ordinators or conference organisers by e-mail.
