A word of introduction

This fifth Congress of EUROBIO (Thematic Network in Biology 39561-CP-1-BE-ERASMUS-ETN) will be organised in one of the oldest universities of Europe (founded in 1588) and in a part of Europe which is "very green" and which also has a high cultural level (Schiller, Goethe, Haeckel, to name only a few).  We will focus on aspects of the relationship between society and biology, general and permanent education and biology.  A larger part of the time will be dedicated to discussions : after having reached our goals in terms of European PhD and Quality Assessment, we have to disseminate this information in 2001 and also need to define our future goals in terms of "Biology and Society" and "Continuous Education (CE)".

The meeting will start with a pre-congress meeting on a specific topic of human biology, designed already in the spirit of CE.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Venue of the Congress

Jena provides the unique combination of a beautiful setting, strong cultural and philosophical high-tech industry, and above all, a modern university.  The Faculty of Biology and Pharmacy at Friedrich-Schiller-University offers a pleasant and convenient venue with all lecture halls, cafeterias and several hotels located directly in the city centre.  Hotels will be available at reasonable prices in different categories, but early booking is recommended.

The Faculty of Biology has responsibility for the teaching of different degree programs in biology, nutrition science, biochemistry, pharmacy, biology teachers and bioinformatics.  Moreover, several high-ranked research institutes focussed on molecular biotechnology, chemical ecology and biogeochemistry and many bio-oriented companies form a "Bio-Region" centred around Jena.

Travel arrangements

Jena can be reached from the airports of Frankfurt, Berlin and Munich within 3-4 hours by train.  Some connections are also available to Erfurt or Leipzig, which are about 1 to 1 1/2hour away.  Train travel to many large European cities like Amsterdam, Budapest, Paris and Vienna, are also convenient.

At the international Airport of Frankfurt, there is a Railway station allowing to join the main Station of Frankfurt within a few minutes.  From there, comfortable trains are leaving at 7:23, 8:05, 9:23, 10:05, 11:23, 12:05 etc, which allows you to reach Jena (Jena West station) within 3-3,5 hours with a change either at Eisenach or at Weimar.  The Jena West station is close to the city center (5-10 min walk), which you can also reach by taxi or by bus (line 15, leave at the station Löbtergraben which is close to the Ibis and not far from the Esplanade Hotel).

Jena can also be reached by train from cities with international airports like Berlin or Münich within 3-4 hours.  Here, you will arrive in Jena at the station Jena Paradies.  You can walk to the center (5-10 min) or take a tram (line 1 direction Zwätzen) which also leaves at the station Löbdergraben.
