1999-2002 :involved in the EC-INCO project 'Mangrove degradation and resilience in the Indian sub-continent : the cases of Godavari Estuary and South West Sri Lanka'. Research topics include the fate of mangrove carbon in different mangrove ecosystems, and the importance of different primary producers to the faunal communities in mangrove ecosystems. Most of this work is based on the use of the natural abundance of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes (d13C and d15N), and the potential of these tracers as an indicator for migration of fish and prawns is also evaluated.
2003 : Ongoing work focusses on the role of microbial production (primary and secondary) in the carbon dynamics of intertidal mangrove sediments, and on the biogeochemical interactions between intertidal mangroves and the aquatic environment. See project page for details.
