Welcome at the Doctoral School of Human Sciences (DSh)
Our doctoral school is characterized by its diversity together with its broad expertise. To keep in close touch with these resources, we have based our doctoral school on the principal of active interaction. The principle of interaction implies a dynamic model of organizing the doctoral school, with input from diverse resources.
As the doctoral school we offer multiple activities to assist in extending and improving your capabilities, in succeeding in gaining a PhD. We also strongly support PhD students in setting up activities of mutual interest. We offer some predetermined formats (content seminar, master classes, ...) as explained here.
On the basis of cooperation we hope to keep closely in touch with the needs of our PhD students. With the monthly newsletter, together with the website we endeavour to keep you informed and importantly up to date. (http://www.vub.ac.be/phd/doctoralschools/dsh/index.html)
We wish you every success in your doctoral studies and trust you will appreciate our joint collaboration.

This year's edition of the research seminar 'Virtual Media' seizes Marshall McLuhan's (1911-1980) 100th anniversary to explore the work and thought of the Canadian media theorist. In a series of sessions, spread over this academic year, we will deal with selected writings from two posthumously published books, Laws of Media: The New Science (1988; co-authored with Eric McLuhan) and The Global Village: Transformations in World Life and Media in the 21st Century (1989; co-authored with Bruce R. Powers). In both works McLuhan explains and summarizes his ideas about media effects through the model of 'the tetrad'.
The seminar starts officially with our Centennial Conference 'McLuhan's Philosophy of Media' (26-28 October 2011). For all information, see:
http://www.mcluhancentennial.eu/
The next session will be held Wednesday, November 9th 2011, 10-12pm, where the goals, expectations and plans of the seminar will be clarified further.
Since this seminar aims at deepening insight and discussing skills in theoretical debates, it expects from participants a thorough reading of the texts and a critical and engaged participation in the sessions.
For subscription, please write to one of the organizers of the seminar before October 24th: prof. Karl Verstrynge (karl.verstrynge@vub.ac.be -- 02-629 25 96) or prof. Joke Bauwens (jbauwens@vub.ac.be -- 02-629 18 29).

Approved Internal PhD Seminars!
Cluster 3 of the DSh Doctoral Training Programme also validates internal VUB PhD workshops. These workshops are series of meetings, which take place with a certain regularity and have several participants. They are organised by a Faculty, Department, Research Group, or by an individual supervisor. These internal VUB PhD workshops are different from the individual contact between PhD student and supervisor.
The list of internal PhD seminars is not meant to be exhaustive, but is only meant to facilitate the process of awarding credits. You can consult the list here.

New call for PhD Presentation Days
The Doctoral School of the Human Sciences (DSh) calls for proposals for the organisation of PhD Presentation days in 2009. With this call the DSh aims to support VUB PhD researchers by communicating their work to their peers inside and outside the VUB. The deadline for applications is May 1, 2009. The call text and the application procedure can be found here.
DSh call system ready
The Call is seen as one of the major instruments of the DSh, calling upon PhD students to propose an activity within a pre-determined format. The DSh wants to provide the VUB PhD community with the structural opportunity to decide on the content of DSh activities, by launching calls for activities. At this moment, the following formats are used: 1/master classes; 2/phd presentation days; 3/content seminars. A call for phd presentation days openened on April 1 (see here). A new call for master classes is expected in June, and a call for content seminars in September. For more information on the call system and the time table, see here.
Fifth Day of the PhD Student LK / 5de Dag van de Doctorandi LK
The DSh is co-organising the 5th Day of the LK PhD student, which aims to offer a skills training to the participating PhD students. It gives them the opportunity to practice in giving a short lecture on their research (15 minutes + 5 minutes questioning). The audience is asked to assess the quality of the presentations. All presenters (PhD students) will receive a written report with the outcome of the analysis of all assessments provided. This way, the presenters receive individual feedback addressing their performance. More information can be found here.

Information sessions on Doctoral Schools/Doctoral Training Programme VUB.
From this academic year on, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel will again be offering its PhD students the opportunity to take part in the Doctoral Training Programme ('Doctoraatsopleiding'). The aim of this new Doctoral Training Programme is to support the PhD students during their PhD project, to stimulate a qualitative research culture and to enable PhD students to develop a wider range of skills. The emphasis of the Programme lies on flexibility. In this way the Doctoral Training Programme is tailored to the actual needs of individual PhD students. In concrete terms the Programme will be organised in three Doctoral Schools: Doctoral School of Human Sciences; Doctoral School of Natural Sciences and (Bioscience) Engineering; Doctoral School of Life Sciences and Medicine. To inform all interested PhD students, professors and other members of the staff of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the Central PhD Office organises two information sessions on the PhD Training Programme and the Docoral Schools. At the campus Etterbeek the session will take place on Wednesday 26 November 2008 between 12.30 and 13.30 in QC.
