The academic year in which a PhD student submits his/her PhD thesis requires a special enrolment, with
a slightly higher enrolment fee. Contact the faculty's enrolment desk for more information. PhD students planning to submit their PhD thesis in the near future are adviced to contact the chairman of the PhD committee of their doctorate. Additional instructions for
submitting a PhD thesis can be found here for the Medical Sciences:
Submission of the PhD thesis for Medical Sciences
The candidate should submit the following documents to the Dean:
1. A letter stating his/her wish to obtain the Ph.D. degree in Medical Sciences as well as the title of the thesis, the place of work, the name of the promoter and the discipline of the work.
2. Curriculum vitae
3. Reprints of published work, if available
4. Ten copies of the thesis, preferably written in English, with a letter indicating the names of at least two individuals who have read the manuscript for suggestions and criticism
5. A summary of the thesis (max. 2 pages)
7. A jury composition advised in advance by the promoter and by the chairman of the Faculty’s PhD committee.
The jury is composed of 3 VUB members (including chair person), one or two
international members and at least one, preferably two experts of other Flemish universities.
The Dean proposes, in collaboration with the Ph.D. committee, the jury for the doctoral exam to the Faculty’s council.
After the approval by the Faculty’s council the PhD thesis is sent out by the Dean to all members of the jury. Evaluation will take place in about 6 weeks after this moment and public defence is normally scheduled another 6 weeks later (this also depends on the evaluation and the work required for revision).
