Welcome

Welcome to the Doctoral School of Natural Sciences and (Bio-) Engineering (NSE). NSE is one of the three Doctoral Schools of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the two others being the Doctoral School of Human Sciences (DSh) and the Doctoral School of Life Sciences and Medicine (LSM).

From 2009 on, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel will offer its PhD students the opportunity to take part in the Doctoral Training Program ('Doctoraatsopleiding'). The aim of this new Doctoral Training Program is to support the PhD students during their PhD project, to stimulate a qualitative research culture and to enable PhD students to develop a wider range of skills. The emphasis of the program lies on flexibility. In this way the Doctoral Training Program is tailored to the actual needs of individual PhD students. In concrete terms the programme will be organised in three Doctoral Schools:

The Doctoral School of Natural Sciences and (Bio-) Engineering is directly linked to two Faculties, the Faculty of Sciences and (Bio-)Engineering Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering. The Faculty of Physical Education and Physiotherapy is an associate Faculty. The aim of NSE is to provide a specific Doctoral Training Program for the enrolled PhD students from the two Faculties in order to offer the students broad opportunities to increase their general and specific knowledge. This is important, not only at the level of the VUB and the Belgian Academic world, but also to gain better international visibility.

SCK•CEN Day of the PhD's

The Belgian Nuclear Research Centra organizes a 'Day of the PhD's' on October 6th 2011.

In a conscious desire to increase its pool of highly specialized researchers and to tighten the links with the universities, SCK•CEN embarked, in 1992, on a programme to support PhD candidates and post-doctoral researchers. Today, about 50 young scientific researcher are supported by SCK•CEN and perform their work in research field that reflect the priority programmes and R&D topics of SCK•CEN.

This "Day of the PhD's" aims at bringing together all our young scientific researchers, their promoters and colleagues at the universities, their mentors and other scientific collaborators at SCK•CEN, and the members of the Scientific Council, in order to present and discuss the ongoing PhD and post-doc research.

VIB/VUB Workshop Entrepreneurship in Life Sciences - 9,10,12 and 13 May 2011 - Brussels

Flanders and Brussels have a strong tradition in life sciences, particularly in biomedical and agro-food life sciences. Over the years, several entrepreneurs have shown that valorization of fundamental scientific research can ultimately lead to the inception of a successful spin-off company. For those innovators, it took more than scientific excellence to be successful. They had to engage in fascinating fields such as Intellectual Property Rights, Human Resources, financial management, negotiations & agreements and business development.

Is becoming a successful entrepreneur your future ambition? Are you interested in this fascinating world where a whole range of disciplines meet? Then you are lucky as the four day long ‘Workshop Entrepreneurship in Life Sciences’ is a unique opportunity to gather required skills in a single intensive course. Experts in business economics and tech transfer from the VUB and VIB, together with senior executives from industry, document key concepts, familiarize you with the life sciences industry profile, comment on current business models and deliver you a practical guide on how to start your future life sciences company!

VUB PhD Research Day 2010

The Central PhD Office and the 3 Doctoral Schools join forces to present the first VUB PhD Research Day on Friday the 28th of May 2010. In recent years we have seen similar successful initiatives from different individual faculties which inspired us to organise a first time great event in honor of all our PhD students of all disciplines. Currently, there are approximately 1200 researchers preparing a PhD at the VUB. By organising the PhD Research Day we would like to give them the opportunity to meet each other and to present their projects to the entire VUB community. The event is meant to be inspiring and we hope to bring our researchers closer together.

CAMPUSTALKS 2010 -DUURZAAMHEID 3 MAART 2010@KK (12-14U)

Have an inspiring lunch in Kultuurkaffee and get by with the latest efforts on sustainability, served in 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds. No more, no less. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up and room for CROSSTALKING afterwards.

Presentations will be held in the languages of the capital, being a mix of English, French and Dutch.

SPEAKER’S LINE UP

• Willy Baeyens (Analytical and Environmental Chemistry, VUB)
• Michel Penninckx (Physiologie & Ecologie microbiennes, ULB)
• Herman Terryn & Bruno Van Mele (Metallurgy, Electrochemistry and Materials
Science, VUB)
• Hubert Rahier (Physical Chemistry and Polymer Science, VUB)

and many more!

Campustalks is a new initiative inspired by Pecha Kucha* Night Brussels, developed and organized by CROSSTALKS and supported by the rectorateof Vrije Universiteit Brussel. This 5th edition is initiated by VUB’s Taskforce Sustainability, aiming at the development of a strategic and sustainable long term vision for the university. The idea is to present research and projects currently running at VUB, ULB, EhB and/or by alumni with a focus on
ecological, social or economic sustainability.

“WHAT’S THAT IN YOUR POCKET?”

LECTURE by Gene Frantz
TI Principal Fellow Texas Instruments

We have seen the computer move from big rooms to our pockets. And, yes, we have seen many other things in our lives move from big rooms to our pockets. This begs a couple of questions: what other things in big rooms will move to our pockets? And What will happen to those things already in our pockets? This talk will discuss examples of things that have moved from big rooms to our pockets and further discuss what might be next. It will also talk about how technology has impacted this movement and how it will impact our future.

When: Wednesday 24 February 2010, 09h30-10h45
Where: ICAB Incubator, Witte Patersstraat 4 rue des Pères Blancs, 1040 Etterbeek
Organisation : OPTRIMA NV/SA and VUB - ETRO 3D-Lab
Registration : www.optrima.com/GENE/index.htm
