Starting a PhD

There is NO deadline for application. You can apply for admission any time during the year.

If you are looking for information to start a PhD at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, please be aware PhDs are awarded on the basis of research and the authorship and defence of a PhD thesis. This takes 4 to 6 years or sometimes even more. Grants are very limited, and competition is fierce.

In order to be considered for admission, you need to have:

  1. a master's degree
  2. a subject
  3. a supervisor
  4. funding

Before contacting us and before applying, please read carefully the relevant webpages on:

All applications are screened by the relevant Faculty, and not by the Central PhD Office. Applications should be sent to the relevant Faculty or to the Registrar's Office. Please do NOT send your applications to the Central PhD Office.

Welcome

Welcome to the website of the Central PhD Office of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. The Central PhD Office is established to help PhD students start, conduct and complete a PhD project. This covers such diverse aspects as providing information on the administrative aspects of a PhD, helping shape VUB policy concerning the PhD process, offering workshops aimed at developing generic or transferable skills and furthering co-operation with other institutions in the domain of PhD studies.

The emphasis lies on a flexible PhD programme. This approach fits the image of PhD students as early-stage researchers who may need a certain degree of guidance and support, yet are themselves best placed to identify their own particular training needs, issues and concerns. In this way the support provided by the Central PhD Office is tailored to the actual needs of individual PhD students.

In addition, the Central PhD Office acts as a liaison with PhD support activities at the faculty level and at other universities.

What can the Central PhD Office (not) do for you?

The Central PhD Office is a point of contact for all (prospective) PhD students at the VUB. PhD students can turn to us for all matters related to the PhD process which are not specific to their field of study. If you have field-specific queries you should refer to your supervisor.

The Central PhD Office does not decide on the admission of prospective PhD students; applications should be sent to the relevant Faculty or to the Registrar's Office.

The Central PhD Office does NOT provide research fund, but can guide the PhD student through various funding options for scientific research within the VUB.

In addition, the Central PhD Office organises a number of workshops specially targeted at PhD students who are member of a Doctoral School. We also keep you posted on selected workshops offered by other VUB departments. All of these seminars are intended to offer PhD students the opportunity to develop skills which will support their research as well as their teaching abilities, but which will (at a later stage) also prove valuable outside their discipline and the academic environment. These workshops are generally free of charge for members of a Doctoral School of the VUB while some are offered for a minimal fee. For an overview of all available workshops please click here.

Besides this website, there is also the monthly Newsletter for junior researcher. This newsletter alerts you to the latest PhD-related news, such as upcoming workshops, funding deadlines, certain generic (inter)national seminars… and other relevant updates which may be of interest to PhD students.
