Introduction days for new PhD students
At the beginning of February the Central PhD Office and the Doctoral Schools are organising a special introduction for new PhD students. These welcome days are designed to introduce the doctoral process at the VUB and to give some basic but important tools to starting junior researchers. New PhD students will receive a personal invitation by e-mail shortly. Because it is an introductory programme, PhD students who have started more than 1 year ago should not participate.

Workshop 'Networking skills'
Who you are and who you know in your professional environment becomes increasingly important. New opportunities can present themselves through a network, just by knowing the right people who can make it happen for you. This workshop hands you the tools to increase your social capital. You will learn how to build your network and how to maximize your relations. Tips on how to confidently make new contacts and sustain your existing professional connections. The workshop also addresses the growing importance of online networking.

Call for papers VAL Research Day (DSh 94)
The Flemish association for literary theory (Vlaamse Vereniging voor Algemene en Vergelijkende Literatuurwetenschappen, VAL) is organising a Research Day at the VUB on May 11th, 2012.
Provisional programme:
Plenary sessions on:
- Internationalisation
- Academic publishing
- Structure and planning of PhD
- The Netherlands Research School for Literary Studies (OSL)
Parallel sessions:
- 15 min. Presentation of PhD Research + 15min. discussion with respondent(s) per PhD student
You are invited to submit a proposal for a presentation. Send an abstract of max. 300 words with a short description of your research, the specific domain(s) and in which phase of your PhD project you are currently in (orientation, research, writing, finalising) to avzoggel@vub.ac.be.

International Scientific Conference "Networks in the Global World: Structural Transformations in Europe, the US and Russia"
St. Petersburg State University, Centre for German and European Studies (St. Petersburg State University – Bielefeld University), Junior Sociologists Network of International Sociological Association, Russian Political Science Association coordinated by the Council of Young Scientists of the Faculty of Sociology invite you to participate at the International Scientific Conference "Networks in the Global World: Structural Transformations in Europe, the US and Russia", which will take place on the 22nd - 24th of June 2012 in St. Petersburg (Russia).
The objective of the conference is to find responses to the challenges arising from the increasing influence of networks in contemporary societies and the consequent structural transformations in Europe, Russia and the US by joining the efforts of representatives of various scientific schools and disciplines.
Central themes of the conference:
- Inter-firm networks and the development of global markets
- Network analysis of public politics
- Academic communities: Network approaches to research
- Knowledge networks and innovations in the global world
Languages of the conference: English, Russian. Interpretation will be provided.

Call for ESA 'Drop your thesis!'
In 2011 the European Space Agency proudly announced its 'Drop Your Thesis!' 2012 programme. Through this programme, a team of university students will be given the opportunity to carry out experiments in microgravity using the ZARM Drop Tower Facility in Bremen, Germany. This facility is one of the most sophisticated and high-quality research centres of its kind in Europe and boasts a 146 m high tower that provides experiments with up to 9.3 s of microgravity.
Application to Drop Your Thesis! is open to individuals who are 18 to 28, are citizens of an ESA Member or Cooperating State, are Masters or PhD students in a university from an ESA Member or Cooperating State, and are studying a scientific or engineering subject.
The deadline for experiment proposals, February 13, 2012, is quickly approaching!

LSM PhD Day 2012
After a successful first PhD day, held on the Medical Campus in Jette, a sequel couldn’t stay out. Under the name “Research Unlimited”, all PhD students of the Doctoral School of Life Sciences and Medicine (DSlsm) will be gathered together on Tuesday, March 27, 2012. The organizers, an enthusiastic team of PhD students, want to stimulate scientific interactions between PhD students from different research groups and disciplines.
If you are a PhD student and you are a member of the DSlsm, then register quickly so you don’t miss the next edition of “Research Unlimited”. Submit your abstract before February 13th, to Elke.Van.Rossen@vub.ac.be and who knows, maybe you will be selected to give an oral presentation during this day. Instructions for the submission of your abstract can be found on one of the links below. Furthermore, the organizers invite lab assistants, technical engineers, post-docs, professors and all people who are interested, to register and to enjoy this day of unlimited science.

FWO PhD fellowships
The FWO supports PhD researchers in several ways:
- PhD fellowship offers young researchers the opportunity to obtain their PhD after four years of research.
- A clinical PhD fellowship allows young clinical scientists to devote themselves part-time to their PhD research for a period of two years.
- Non-scientific researchers can work one year full-time on the completion of their PhD thesis with a special PhD fellowship.
The deadline for proposals is February 1st, 2012.
Important: new applicants should register online at least 48 hours prior to the deadline.

FWO postdoctoral fellowships
The FWO also offers opportunities for postdoctoral researchers:
- A postdoctoral research fellowship allows them to perform full-time research at postdoctoral level for a period of three to six years
- This support is also available to young clinical scientists with a PhD. A renewable senior clinical fellowship of five - fifteen years allows them to work part-time on their postdoctoral research, alongside their clinical activities.
The deadline for proposals is February 1st, 2012.
