The Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Université Libre de Bruxelles have created the VBO-FEB VUB-ULB Chair: Transitioning Belgian Companies into Circularity, in collaboration with the Federation of Enterprises in Belgium. Mobility specialist Cathy Macharis (VUB) and bio-engineer Wouter Achten (ULB) lead the research.

The goal of this research is to contribute to the transition of enterprises into the circular economy. A multi-dimensional circular economy opportunities’ assessment framework for companies will be analysed. Additionally, a set of criteria and strategies for companies to rethink and redesign their products and services to be better integrated into the circular economy will be introduced.

The chair will select ten companies to discuss the development circularity evaluation methodology and transition framework, which will be finetuned and applied in three companies selected for further accompaniment as case studies. Furthermore, three seminars will be organized to present the project and studied instruments. The findings will be integrated in scientific publications and courses/materials of the following programs of the VUB and ULB:

  • Postgraduate on sustainability (VUB)
  • Master in Environmental Sciences and Management (ULB)
  • Advanced Masters in Transition Urbanism and MSc in Urban Studies (ULB)

The first seminar will take place on Wednesday the 27th of March 2019 in the head office of the FEB. The address is Rue Ravenstein 4, 1000 Brussels.
