The Local Governance of Immigrant Integration in Europe: Multi-level Dynamics, Convergence and Divergence

Wednesday, 17 April, 2013 - 18:00 to Wednesday, 17 April, 2013 - 20:00
Karel Van Miert Building
Pleinlaan 5, 1050 Brussel
Institute for European Studies together with Eurocities
Lecture

Research has shown that, although immigrant integration policy is mainly a  national competence, different cities in one country frequently develop very different approaches to immigrant integration, often even contesting the national policies.

This lecture will focus on how different cities govern immigrant integration. What are the convergences between the cities’ policies? What are the divergences? How do cities interact with the national level? Do they push for setting up national policies? Do they contest them? And, how do cities coordinate their policies amongst them or with the national government?

Our first speaker, Professor Peter Scholten will present his research on the multi-level dynamics of local immigrant integration policies. Our second speaker,  Mayor of Malmo, Mr. Kent Andersson, will highlight the insights of this research with their practical experiences in local integration governance.
